Memorial of Blessed John Paul II, Pope

October 22: Memorial of Blessed John Paul II, Pope

The Gospel today (Luke 12:35-38) enjoins us to be prepared for the master’s return at a time we do not know. “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants to await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.”

The parable contains a lesson in faithfulness – faithfulness which allows us to persevere in living out an unswerving commitment to the Lord. Faithfulness demands consistency, a determination to stay the course, and hard work.

Today is the memorial of Blessed John Paul II and in one of his homilies he warns us to prepare ourselves for great trials that will come that will demand of us a total dedication to Christ and for Christ. He said that we must be strong and prepared and trust in Christ and in his Holy Mother. The Alleluia verse today tells us to “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you may have the strength to stand before the Son of Man.”

Our heavenly Father will not be outdone in this faithfulness. Not only does He give the grace and strength to be faithful, but He also rewards that faithfulness. The Gospel says that He will reward those faithful servants He finds vigilant on his arrival by proceeding to wait on them!

Are we faithful to God and ready to give Him an account of our stewardship? Will we be ready when He comes and knocks?

Blessed Father Dominic, man of faith, pray for us.
