Civic Engagement

Georgia Tech is committed to being a good neighbor

Legislative Day to Draw Hundreds of Civil Servants
Community leaders including city council members and county commissioners will join state and federal leaders at Georgia Tech’s Legislative Day celebration before this Saturday’s football game against the University of Pittsburgh. The annual event serves to salute legislators, regents, and community leaders for their service and to thank them for their support of the Institute.

Dialog: Nobles on Service
Professor Greg Nobles reminds us of an important distinction between participating in short-term service projects and taking the next important step toward catalyzing social change. Digging deeper to determine the root cause of needs is one goal of the Westside Communities Alliance and the Semester in the City Course, which Nobles initiated nearly two decades ago. Improving Access: Westside Communities Alliance Update
Efforts to improve Westside K-12 schools is underway. Outreach representatives from Georgia State University, Spelman College, and Georgia Tech recently came together to audit current programs and identify opportunities for collaboration and efficiencies to improve access to college for students in the community.

K-12 and Beyond

Collaborating to positively impact Atlanta's youth

Enduring Partnership: Centennial Place Elementary School
Buzz with Centennial Place StudentsLocated only steps away from the southern edge of the Georgia Tech campus, Centennial Place Elementary School (CPE) continues to partner with the Institute to keep its STEM curriculum both relevant and challenging. Last year, more than 50 Georgia Tech students served as tutors for Centennial Place children. Additionally, through its NSF Pre-Teaching project, Georgia Tech will place three more students and future educators as paid interns in Centennial Place classrooms this coming year.

This past week, CPE Principal Allison Shelton accepted a $7,500 grant from the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education to fund an innovative rewards program to generate greater parental involvement. The idea was seeded by Tech student Stephanie Graer during her pre-teaching internship at CPE.

Inspiring High School Completion: Mentor Walk
Georgia Tech co-hosted the Mentor Walk this fall with the Campus Community Partnership Foundation to inspire children to stay in school. Providing a meaningful experience on a college campus while engaging with college students as role models, the Mentor Walk honors Carolyn Young, wife of former United Nations Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, who taught in Atlanta Public Schools and has been recognized for distinguished service in teaching and mentoring.

Georgia Tech’s Strategic Plan lays out ambitious goals for the next 25 years, perhaps none more important than the Institute’s commitment to “focus on societal benefit and improving the human condition.” In that spirit, this year’s Liam’s Legacy Symposium highlights the personal and professional experiences of socially engaged scholars and activists, challenging us to embed that commitment to the human condition more deeply in the campus culture, to make Georgia Tech’s motto “Progress and Service” a true mark of the Institute’s identity. Panelists include:
  • John Wilson, President of Morehouse College
  • Harley Etienne, Professor of Urban Planning, University of Michigan
  • Sheri Davis-Faulkner, Research Associate, Georgia Tech
  • Kate Grace, Director, Community Building Fellows Program, Emory University

First Ever Civic Engagement Expo
Wednesday, December 4, 2:00-4:00 p.m., Clough Commons Atrium
The newly formed Service Learning and Community Engagement Forum at Georgia Tech serves to coordinate and celebrate the Institute’s mission of "Progress and Service." On December 4, student activities and projects will be on exhibition in the Clough Commons Atrium to raise awareness and interest among the campus community.
The Georgia Tech Office of Government and Community Relations is the Institute’s primary connection to the federal, state, and local governments and communities. Through active advocacy and relationship-building, Government and Community Relations staff members work to exhibit the opportunity of Georgia Tech and build esteem for the Institute in order to achieve its goals of progress and service for all that it touches.
