Skull mask for Day of the Dead

October Newsletter

What's printing down by the river Medway?

Boundary Wharf studio neighbours Printed Wonders and Coal Shed Press joined forces this summer, forming Medway Fine Printmakers so that together we could run courses, events and open access with more printmaking facilities. Since July we've been running introductions to screen printing, etching, relief printing, Gocco and thermofax, and have attracted regular users to our open access Wednesdays. We've hosted birthday parties and taken part in open studio events, and we've met some very lovely people printing down by the river.

We've now got some exciting news and events to share!

Sugar Skulls

Día de los Muertos

Mexico comes to Boundary Wharf

Two days of festivities during the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration at our studios. Activities for all ages, including making colourful Papel Picado paper cut banners, decorative candle-lit shrines, screen printing skeletons to make a jointed puppet, making jewellery and tin decorations, lighting up the evening with lanterns, customising masks, printing tote bags, decorating sugar skulls and contributing to a zine that will become a souvenir of the event.

Part of the Family Arts festival but not just for children, and there’s no need to book, just drop in. Activities are up to £5, and some are free. You’re very welcome to just come along and have a look at our homage to Mexico down on the wharf. We hope you can join us, and spread the word.

Fri 1st & Sat 2nd Nov, 1pm – 7pm

20:20 Print Exchange

A printmaking workshop collaboration

We're taking part in the 20:20 print project started by Hot Bed Press in Salford and Red Hot Press in Southampton. The artists of Medway Fine Printmakers are busy producing editions of 20cm x 20cm prints, and we'll be hosting an exhibition of work from other print workshop participants across the UK.

Bigger & Better

After a happy year down by the river, we're planning to move to a bigger building with large shop front. Behind that will be the printmaking studios, an education space and our library of design and illustrated books. We're really excited by the possibilities, the nice toilets, wheelchair access, extra space and the warmth this will add to our facilities! We hope to open the shop for some days during December, run some Christmas themed workshops and share our plans with everyone.
