The Top Five Reasons WE Ride!

As the holidays roll around, WE got to thinking about why WE do what WE do. WE Bike NYC is an all-volunteer organization that takes a lot of energy, time and effort on the part of many many volunteers. So why do WE ride? What's different about riding in an organized group, rather than alone or with friends? Why is it important to ride only with other female-identifying riders now and then? Our goal is to create a space that is inclusive, welcoming and fun, but in addition to that, we all have our own reasons for both riding and volunteering with WE Bike NYC.  Below are the top 5 reasons WE ride.  What are your reasons?

5. To get comfortable riding with traffic in NYC.

The streets can be intimidating, and riding with a group is a great way to feel more comfortable. Learn from both guided instruction and by watching others! In some cases, WE Bike NYC is the traffic. Such as the picture above at the Annie Londonderry Ride where over 80 women got together to ride and take up some space on the streets!

4. To get and stay healthy and fit.

For WE Bike NYC, "healthy" means both physically and mentally healthy! Riding your bike can be a great way to maintain mental balance, as well as build some serious muscles!  WE offer rides for a variety of levels and, and WE never skimp on the ride snacks! Join us for training rides in 2014 to set and complete a personal cycling goal, such as riding with WE Bike NYC in the 5 Boro Bike Tour, the NYC Century, or just simply biking to work one day a week.  Whatever it is, WE Bike NYC can provide the supportive community you need to get you where you want to go!

3. To see the city from a different perspective.

WE hope you were able to join us for a ride in 2013 that took you out of your regular routine. The picture above was our Mother's Day Cyclofemme ride to Roosevelt Island. Who participated in the 5 Borough Bike Brunch series? 2014 is looking delicious with our newest Best Slice Series where WE'll tour each borough's pizza selection!

2. To make new friends!

Making friends can be challenging in NYC, especially for those of us who moved here as adults! WE Bike NYC is a great way to meet other women with common interests. The number of WE Bike NYC riders is growing everyday, so join us and meet some of the best ladies in the city!

1. To have FUN in a community of women who bike!

In the end, WE all want embrace the joy that comes from riding a bicycle, gaining new friends, and feeling like a part of something larger than ourselves! By riding with a group of women and female identifying cyclists, WE are able to challenge ourselves in new ways, ask questions WE weren't comfortable asking before, and get answers that are relevant to our experiences.  All year round, all kinds of women, all kinds of riders and all kinds of bikes make for a great time both on and off the road!
