HIGHLIGHT

Can System Dynamics help social care researchers to make sense of complex systems?

Social care research requires an understanding of complex issues, such as human need and ageing, capacity and impact of services, use of resources and change over time. Yet the use of modelling and simulation to aid this understanding is comparatively rare.

It is particularly unlikely that many social care researchers are aware of System Dynamics, and its potential to help synthesise diverse types of evidence and explore future scenarios. System Dynamics is already used in the health sector, but as yet rarely in social care.

The Methods Review by Douglas McKelvie sets out a practical introduction to using System Dynamics – no prior knowledge assumed.

RESEARCH

Finding out what helps carers to stay in their job or get a new one

Employment can mean greater emotional well-being, improved social life, financial benefits and a break from caring responsibilities. Our study aims to show what support services are doing and what works best. See more about Dr Marangozov's study here.
