BRUMRISE TO BRUMSET
Tell you who's a fascinating and annoyingly talented chap: Tim Cornbill. An architect by profession, he has a hobby that he's incredibly good at. Photographing sunsets (he calls them "Brumsets") and sunrises ("Brumrises") in the city of Birmingham.
"I'm born and bred Birmingham and as an architect obviously I have a passion for buildings," he says. "The eclectic architecture in this city is perfect for these sorts of shots. This top picture is a personal
favourite from 2011, showing the sun setting behind the
Holloway Circus Tower. The BT tower can be seen on the
right along with the tower cranes working to build the new library."

His stunning pictures are all available to buy and could make for a great gift for lovers of the city. The one above is a sunset from the Secret Garden reflecting off the Library glass, taken on the opening day.
His 'Birmingham Retrospective' series (snaps of yesteryear Brum held in front of modern day images of the city) were exhibited in June as part of the Royal Institute of British Architects 'Love Architecture' festival. They were displayed in the Great Western Arcade and in the Atrium of The Cube. There's still a small display in a shop window in the Great Western Arcade, and he'd love to exhibit his 'Brumsets & Brumrises' should the opportunity arise.

"This dramatic sunrise [above] was on 1st July 2013, when a smoke plume rose over the city centre centre from a fire at a recycling plant in Smethwick. It was quite surreal as the plume was lit up by the rising sun below, creating a scene that was, for me, reminiscent of a disaster movie. You can see more shots of Birmingham during the blaze in a set called 'Brumageddon' on my Flickr.

BIRMINGHAM'S NEXT MICHELIN STAR?

It's easy to get carried away with Birmingham's culinary success, but even with a tempered approach Waters On The Square, Harborne, is knock-you-on-your-backside brilliant. Executive Chef Andy Waters (pictured) won a Michelin star in 2002 within 6 months of opening Edmunds, Henley-In-Arden, before relocating to Brindleyplace and making it into the Sunday Times top 100 restaurants. Since then he's won a Michelin Bib Gourmand at The Queens, Belbroughton (where he remains as head chef) and, for our money, he's on a similar trajectory with 'Waters', where longtime understudy Gareth Ward is running the kitchen.
