Counter Tobacco's second annual photo contest a great success!

Counter Tobacco is excited to announce the winners of our second annual photo contest! We asked our audience to submit photos of tobacco industry marketing at the point of sale, and were impressed by the breadth and creativity of the photos submitted. Beyond just the contest, we hope these photos will be used to continue POS advocacy work.

Out of 66 image submissions, winners have been chosen in 4 categories of tobacco industry activities at the point of sale:
  1. Greatest Youth Appeal
  2. Novel Products
  3. Electronic Cigarettes
  4. Funniest or Most Ironic
The image above includes our Grand Prize Winners, Julie J. for her little cigar display photo from Fon Du Lac, WI (top left), and Emily B. from Ontario for her family smoking advertisement found in Las Vegas, NV (top right). Also pictured is one of our winners for greatest youth appeal, Ashley R., for a Blu Electronic Cigarette advertisement under the counter near candy in Harrison, AR (bottom left). The bottom right photo won an honorable mention in the youth appeal category and was taken by JR F. in Yelville, AR.

Photo contest shows tobacco industry promotional strategies at point of sale, including appeal to youth

The Surgeon General has concluded that "advertising and promotional activities by tobacco companies have been shown to cause the onset and continuation of smoking among adolescents and young adults." [1] The tobacco industry spends the majority of their marketing budget at the point of sale promoting its deadly products. [2] In particular, putting tobacco products next to advertisements for soft drinks, candy, and snacks are all tactics that can make tobacco more appealing to youth. CounterTobacco.org is dedicated to providing tools and resources to counteract retail tobacco product sales and marketing. The photo contest and image gallery expose the tactics used by the tobacco industry, helping to educate communities, and especially youth, about the dangers of this marketing. Education and exposing the industries' tactics is critical to building awareness and a first step in the policy change process. These photos offer tobacco control advocates a powerful tool to show what is happening at the point of sale.

See a complete list of winners and images here, and even more photos in our updated image gallery, where you can rate your favorites!

With the tobacco industry wielding its influence and dollars at the point of sale, policy changes at the federal, state, and local levels are critical. Learn more about counteracting retail tobacco products sale and marketing at CounterTobacco.org
