March for One Million Meals

Tough Mudder Team Runs Race for Hungry Children

On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Million Meals March team ran the Tough Mudder race in Temecula, Calif. on behalf of the Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation after months of hard training. The Tough Mudder is an endurance race in which participants run a 10 to 12-mile long military-style obstacle course. The Million Meals March team consisted of 13 members, including Executive Director Arthur Han, Director of Operations Zachary Lopez, Communications Manager Tran Ngo, Board of Directors Brian Kim and Vincent Lopez, and friends of the HSICF, who participated to help raise funds for the final shipment of MannaPack Rice to orphans in North Korea and to raise awareness of the hunger issues plaguing children around the world.

The team was able to raise more than $2,800 by asking friends, family and coworkers to sponsor a runner and help donate to this worthy cause. While lending a helping hand and providing words of encouragement, the group ran together across a grueling 11-mile course at the Vail Lake Resort. The course featured 20+ obstacles, ranging from “Kiss the Mud” (mud crawl under barbed wire) to the "Berlin Wall” (climb over a 12 foot wooden wall) to "Electroshock Therapy" (sprint through a field of live electrical wires). The team was challenged physically and mentally, but they were able to finish as a group, leaving no runner behind. After his body recovered from the vigor of the race, Arthur Han was able to reflect, “It was a memorable and fun event for all of us. The inspiration and motivation we gave each other fueled everyone to finish the race together as a team. But most importantly, we were running on behalf of all the voiceless children around the world.”

Final Shipment Acquired

HSICF Surpasses 1 Million Meals
with Last Shipment to our Orphans in North Korea

The Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation has acquired the meals for its final shipment of the year. The 40 foot container is filled with more than 272,000 meals of MannaPack Rice, a rice meal fortified with essential protein, vitamins and minerals. The food shipment is currently heading to North Korea, specifically benefiting orphans at P’yongsung, Hwang-Ju and Sariwon. It is expected to arrive at the end of November and will sustain them through the first quarter of 2014.

This shipment will help the Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation surpass its goal of serving one million meals this year, as outlined in the Topple Hunger 2013 campaign, bringing our total to 1,152,000 meals served. Director of Operations Zachary Lopez explained, “This is a monumental achievement for our organization. In the first four years I was with HSICF, I don’t believe we served a million meals combined.”

Arthur Han added, “It shows how we have grown as an organization but we couldn't have achieved this by ourselves. It was the collaborative effort of countless people including our staff, volunteers and especially everyone who has supported the foundation over the years. We cannot thank you enough for helping us make Topple Hunger 2013, a reality.”

While we are still in 2013, the HSICF is eagerly planning for a busy 2014, and is hoping to expand the scope of all of our programs in terms of number of children and meals served. We sincerely appreciate and look forward to your continued support!
