SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

November 18th, 2013

Hello My Friends;

I send you greetings from Italy.  I've just finished the second leg of our trio tour (with Yotam Silberstein & Paul Gill) - where we performed  at the Padova Jazz Festival for four nights.  The festival exceeded my expectations in every way, it was amazing!  I had been invited to Padova as part of the "SmallsLIVE Presents:" concert series that I've been developing.  My idea is to produce concerts at  jazz festivals in Europe under the SmallsLIVE banner and to present different groups associated with the club.  Because Smalls' reputation for great New York City Jazz is enough to attract audiences it's not entirely necessary to have all-stars in the band.  In this way we can showcase lesser-known and younger talents to European Jazz fans and offer promoters an economic alternative to presenting concerts.

At Padova we played two concerts per evening.  We played a trio set early and then did a "special guest" concert later in the evening.  Our guests included prominent Italian jazz musicians such as Roberto Tamborini (trumpet) and Carlo Atti (tenor).  For the final concert we had the great Jesse Davis, who now lives in Verona, perform with us  Each show was sold out with people spilling into the hallways and stairs.  The audiences were enthusiastic, incredibly attentive and really warm.  I was truly pleased to see large groups of college-age audience in attendance.  I was also very happy learning how many people knew about Smalls and had watched our shows on the live-stream.   People asked a lot of questions about the club and I even did a television interview where I discussed Smalls, Mitch Borden and the culture of musicians that make Smalls their home.  Overall is it was a resounding success and I'm sure will be the start of something that will continue to grow and benefit musicians and this music as well as the beautiful people of Italy.

Our next stop will be Spain where we have been invited to perform at the Barcelona Jazz Festival and will have Melissa Aldana as our guest for one concert.  From there we go to Valencia and then finally Madrid before coming back to New York City and our beloved home at 183 West 10th street in Greenwich Village.  Ciao!

This Week At Smalls:

Monday:  Starting our week is a young pianist that I've been very impressed with Chris Pattishall.  He has fluid technique and a great feeling for the music.  He'll be playing at 7:30 PM with Chris Smith on bass and Kyle Poole on drums.  Following him at 10PM is the great Ari Hoenig and his quartet with the ingenious and creative Tivon Pennicott on tenor sax, Eden Ladin on piano and Noam Wiesenberg on bass.  Late night is the domain of our hometown favorite Spencer Murphy and his group.  Come early and stay late!

Tuesday:  Subbing in my normal trio slot is a great master of guitar Gene Bertoncini.  Gene is a true gentleman of jazz and a beautiful musician.  He'll be coming in for a solo guitar concert at 7:30 PM.  If you've not heard Gene in this context please take the chance to do so.  At 10:30 PM is our Smalls Legacy Band with the great Frank Lacy and the equally great Josh Evans, Theo Hill & Stacy Dillard.  Our late show is a jam session hosted by Kyle Poole and his trio of "next generation" greats.

Wed & Thur: Our mid-week concerts feature the amazing Eli Digibri and his quartet.  Eli is one of the wave of fantastic Israeli musicians to come to Smalls.  Included in his band is the great Omer Avital on bass, Aaron Goldberg on piano and Obed Calvaire on drums.  Their sets start at 9:30 PM.  Our "Round Midnight" concert showcases one of the most consummate young drummers on the scene Aaron Kimmel and his trio with the wonderful Adam Birnbaum on piano and David Wong on bass.  Also, please be aware that we now have a concert series every Thursday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  We call it "the early Bird" and it's dedicated to real Be-bop groups.  This week we feature the venerable Dwayne Clemons and his excellent quintet with Josh Benko, Sacha Perry, Murray Wall & Jimmy Wormworth.

Fri & Sat:  This weekend our 10:30 PM show is being led by one of the great drummers on the scene - Billy Drummond and his group "Freedom of Ideas".  This is a strong group which features Jaleel Shaw on alto, Adam Birnbaum on piano and the always-swinging Dezron Douglas on bass.  On Friday, our 7:30 PM concert is with resident Ralph LaLama and his trio "Bop Juice" with David Wong on bass and Clifford Barbaro on drums.  On Saturday we showcase pianist Richard Sussman and his quintet with Scott Wendholt, Rich Perry, Mike McGuirk and Anthony Pinciotti.  I also want to invite you to the afterhours show on Friday where we showcase one of the truly finest pianists in New York - Jeremy Manasia and his trio.  They start at 1:00 AM and go to close.

Sunday:  Our 7:30 PM slot showcases the vocalist Antonio Barbagallo and his quartet with the excellent tenor saxophonist Walt WeiskopfPeter Zak on piano and Jason Brown on drums.  At 10PM we have our regular resident genius Johnny O'Neal and trio.  Our "Round Midnight" concert features the fantastic Grant Stewart and his quartet for some late night swinging and standards.

I hope you can make it by the club and enjoy some of this richness.  As always, I appreciate your support of Smalls Jazz Club and hope to see you there in person.  I bid all of you good luck and good life!  Ciao!
