RTO Doctor News for November, 2013

Featured Article

In an effort to better prepare our clients for their upcoming audits, we thought it was important to revisit the issue of trainer and assessor currency in Vocational Education and Training(VET).

As the regulators do their rounds amongst the VET sector currently, we're finding many providers are still coming up with critical non-compliance in this area. To help ensure that your trainers and assessors meet the requirements, RTO Doctor will explore the concept and how to demonstrate compliance with this regulatory requirement at your next audit.  Click here to read more of this month's feature article...

Pearson Education - VET Division Reminder
A quick reminder that at the end of 2013, Pearson will be winding down its VET division. Pearson attributed this significant event to the VET sector undergoing significant funding and structural changes in recent times which have led to increasing uncertainty. These factors, combined with the need to frequently update content due to Training Package reviews, has resulted in an environment which requires significant investment to continue to deliver high quality content and to remain effective.  Pearson will continue to support its clients into 2014. They will / have publish/ed a small number of new editions that were currently in progress but they will not be investing in future new editions of print or digital resources.  Pearson will continue to reprint and stock textbooks while the content is relevant and whilst it remains commercially viable in the marketplace. This includes supplying them during teach out periods after a new or revised training package is endorsed.  To see which new titles are scheduled to be published (if not already) this year for Semester 1 2014 click here...

John Bailey Resources - Update

It would appear that the authorities are being hampered in their attempts to catch up with John Bailey to issue a please explain. John has recently issued an email alert to industry advising of his new telephone contact details (a new mobile number) in preparation for his 'Road Trip' across the country.  If you are contacted by John or his company or receive a visit from him during his 'Road Trip', let the authorities in your State/Territory know as they are trying to track him down.

WA Training Awards

Congratulations to all finalists in the 2013 WA Training Awards. One of RTO Doctor's clients Kimberley Training Institute was named WA Large Training Provider of the Year, and one of their trainers and assessors Jackie Cheng was named WA Trainer of the Year! Both Kimberley Training Institute and Jackie have now finished the final stages of the Australian Training Awards where they are representing WA and the in particular the beautiful Kimberley region of Australia.  Kimberley Training Institute has excelled in recent years in particular in achieving some amazing outcomes for Indigenous people across the Kimberley, providing them with opportunities for personal and professional development that was previously not possible.  Ms Karen Dickinson, Managing Director of Kimberley Training Institute was thrilled with the win, “Four years ago we made a number of changes to better position the Institute for future growth. Since that time we have grown a phenomenal 70%. We are delighted this has also translated to more Aboriginal students studying with us at the higher levels. KTI is a model for engagement with Aboriginal people and closing the gap.” For Jacky Cheng, WA's Trainer of the Year, over the last seven years Ms Cheng’s art training, along with the support from Kullari Regional CDEP has contributed to the Bidyadanga community through the development of a community art centre. The art centre has captured the hearts of the Bidyadanga community, with young and old alike engaging in art to tell their stories. For more information about the win, see the Kimberley Training Institute website.  Congratulations to Jacky and the team at Kimberley Training Institute and we look forward to seeing you and supporting you at the Australian Training Awards on 22 November 2013!

ASQA Loses a major case at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal
Congratulations to Travis Mitchell and GPZ Legal on a landmark win in the AAT against ASQA. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has handed down a significant decision in G Plus G Global Trading Pty Ltd v ASQA.*  ASQA’s auditors will do well to pay attention to the reasoning in this case, which questions the approach taken by ASQA on several fronts.  Despite a much larger dispute at the beginning of the hearing, by the end of the cross-examination of ASQA’s auditor, the only issues remaining in dispute related to whether assessment materials were compliant with the National Code and the NVR Standards.  Senior Member Fice found that the materials were adequate, upheld the appeal and granted renewal of registration to G Plus G.  For a summary of Travis' win, follow the link to his regular blog or read the case on the link above.

CISWA Christmas Hospitality for International Students

Did you know that every year CISWA (Council for International Students of Western Australia) provides a free Christmas Hosting program for international students? CISWA understands that Christmas can be a difficult time of the year when students are living far from family and friends. For the last 20 years, generous, volunteer, West Australian families have invited international students into their homes to share a Christmas celebration, usually on Christmas Day (25th Dec).

If this sounds like something you would like to experience then please download and complete the 2013 Christmas Hospitality-STUDENT APPLICATION for hosts, contact Lia Simmonds at CISWA on info@ciswa.com

HOST TESTIMONIAL

“I’ve hosted international students at our family Christmas events for the past few years, and in that time, had the pleasure of meeting Maharina, a sponsored student from Bangladesh, Jindan, a PhD student from China, and Dheeraj, a Masters student from India.  Despite our very different backgrounds, it’s amazing to hear how similar some aspects of Christmas are around the globe – the day revolving around family and good food, and in the case of India and Australia, a lot of cricket talk amongst the men!

I remember hearing Bob Hawke speak once about how as a UWA student, he would invite the Chinese students from his class around to his home to share a meal, and how much he personally learned from their dinner-table discussions. His involvement in Chinese-Australian relations continued on into his political career and has had a huge impact on the country’s relations with China to this day. Small gestures can lead to much more significant things, it would seem.

My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing our “typical Aussie Christmas” with our visitors, and with the help of CISWA, it’s all arranged seamlessly with a couple of emails. I would recommend Christmas hosting to anyone who believes there is a value in cultural exchange.”
