1) Tomorrow: Memorial Services for Victims of Violence

Friday, December 6, 2013
First mourn, then work for change.

On December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember fourteen young women who in 1989 were murdered because they were women in what became known as the Montreal Massacre. We remember nine women since 1989 murdered on Prince Edward Island by men who knew them. Join others in your community to light a candle of remembrance, to remember, to reflect, and to act so these murders end.

3) Tomorrow: Community Vigil in Ottawa

The Women’s Events Network hosts the December 6 Vigil at the Women’s Monument in Minto Park at the corner of Elgin and Gilmour Streets in Ottawa on Friday, December 6.  Please join us at 6 PM to honour and grieve all women who have died as a result of male violence.  We’ll be paying tribute to our own local women who have lost their lives through senseless violence, and those women who were murdered at the Montreal école Polytechnique in 1989. We will reflect on the tragic situation pertaining to violence against Aboriginal women. The Families of Sisters in Spirit will hold high placards to represent the missing and murdered Aboriginal women – of whom we know there are more than 500.

Come and hear the Minwaashin Lodge Drummers drum and sing.  Listen to our two survivors who have agreed to share their stories and experiences and hear the callout of names of women who have suffered the ultimate violence.  While we listen to our singer Jenna Tenn-Yuk, join us to lay flowers on the monument in tribute to all women who have died as a result of gender-based violence. For more information, please call 613-230-6700 - Valerie Collicott, Women’s Events Network Organizer.

4) Consent Is... Video

Ask. Sex without consent is a crime.
Consent is the theme of the
PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women's 2013-2014 Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Violence. In November 2013, the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women hosted a purple ribbon pinning bee at Beanz Espresso Bar and Cafe in Charlottetown, PEI. Some of the participants shared their thoughts about what consent is in this new video. Thanks to all the volunteers who make possible the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Violence.

The video can be viewed here:  http://vimeo.com/80519120

More information about this year's Campaign can be found on our website at this link:

6) The Countdown to Christmas is On!

There are several ways to help out PEI Family Violence Prevention Services this holiday season. Once again we are doing our Christmas Wish Program, which helps moms shop for kids who have stayed at Anderson House or were part of our Outreach program in 2013. If you are interested in helping a mom shop for her tot, please call 368-8658 and we will pair you with a wish!

Another great way to help out is to donate grocery store gift cards to help families shop for all those holiday meal extras! Grocery gift cards can be mailed to P.O. Box 964, Charlottetown, PE C1A 7M4 or dropped off at 159 Euston Street.

Put our PEI FVPS Gift card under the tree this holiday season and give a gift that changes lives! Sponsor a bed night at Anderson House for a woman or child in need. Please call 894-3354 ext. 222 or email lindsay@fvps.ca to arrange for your gift card(s).

Join this year’s Financial Campaign. We rely on community support to provide quality programs and services across PEI. Together we can make a difference in the lives of women and children in our community. Thank you for making this holiday season brighter for the women and children who rely on PEI Family Violence Prevention Services!

The featured reader for the night will be Orysia Dawydiak. She writes about family, immigrants, nature, rural life, and about confused people with identity crises—like whether or not they are human. The P.E.I. The site assists anyone wanting to connect individuals in need of help with the right person, professional or other types of resources.

Areas of help are included under categories like bullying, cyberbullying, educational supports, mental health, physical health, substance abuse, violence and abuse. The website can point parents in the right direction of their child is being bullied or if the parents are looking for ways to convince the kids to get off the couch and get active.

For more information go to their website, http://helpmychild.ca and/or read the article in the December 2, 2013 Guardian
