Winter Moonlight Bite event canceled

The fall term Moonlight Bite event, initially scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8, has been canceled for fall term. The decision was made after Oregon State's announcement of campus closures for freezing temperatures and snowy road conditions.

UHDS plans to host two Moonlight Bite events during Winter Term — one before midterms and the other before finals.

Apologies for any inconvenience. Good luck with finals and let's feast together next term!

Snow day alerts, updates

Due to continued sub-freezing temperatures and the prevalence of ice and snow throughout Corvallis and nearby communities, Oregon State’s Corvallis campus is closed for Monday, Dec. 9. The Valley Library will also remain closed through Monday.

The OSU Registrar’s Office released a revised finals schedule on Sunday night (see article in sidebar) and posted rescheduled finals on its website.

Thank you for your patience and for your primary attention to personal and community safety during this very inclement weather.

UHDS reminders

  • UHDS service centers will process all mail and packages as soon as the university reopens. It has not been safe for mail carriers to try to deliver to campus. Staff will work as fast as possible, and ask for patience as they sort out three days worth of mail to residents.
  • UHDS dining centers are open Monday, with some adjustments to restaurant offerings and hours. Menus may change without notice. Check what's open on the Food @ OSU page. Bing's Cafe in Weatherford Hall is closed.
  • The UHDS main office in Hawley-Buxton Hall is closed Monday.
  • Please remember to keep your heaters on and windows closed to maintain temperature levels and prevent freezing pipes in the residence halls.
  • Please note, information may change at any time pending university announcements about weather related class closures, etc.  Keep track of Campus Alerts. Find the latest UHDS announcement on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Interested in being a CRF or RA for next year?

Fall is not even over yet, but you may already be thinking about your plans for next year.  Does being a Community Relations Facilitator (CRF) or Resident Assistant (RA) fit into your plans? Are you interested in getting to know others, helping support students in their transition to college, or help create and promote an inclusive living-learning environment? If you answered "yes" to any of the previous descriptions then you should consider applying for the CRF or RA position. Both these positions will not only allow you the opportunity to help others, but will allow you to gain leadership experience, build your resume, and gain skills desirable to employers after college – including communication, leadership, teamwork, the understanding of differences and inclusion, and many more skills. To learn more about the process and to get your questions answered, attend the one of the following information sessions:

  • Monday, January 13, 2014: West side information session, 7 to 8 p.m., Marketplace West Large East Conference Room
  • Tuesday, January 14, 2014: South side information session, 7 to 8 p.m., ILLC 155
  • Wednesday, January 22, 2014: East side information session, 6 to 7 p.m., Azalea House; East side information session, 7 to 8 p.m., Callahan Main Lounge
  • Wednesday, January 27, 2014: MU information session, 7 to 8 p.m., Journey Room
RA position specific interview prep workshops by Career Services:
  • Thursday, February 6, 2014: 4 to 5:30 p.m., Location TBD
  • Wednesday, February 12, 2014: 4 to 5:30 p.m., Location TBD

Check out photos from 'Show Benny Your Room'

Benny the Beaver visited Bloss Hall residents, the winners of the "Show Benny Your Room" social media contest, on Friday, Nov. 22. Benny posed for photos and the UHDS team passed out "I AM BEAVER NATION" whiteboards and pens.

Benny also made a brief stop at the International Living-Learning Center, which was the runner-up hall.

Sign up for break housing now!

All OSU residence halls and cooperative houses will remain open during Winter break at no additional cost.  If you are planning to stay for any period of the break beginning December 14th through Sunday, January 5th, 2014, please sign up for Break Housing so that the Residential Education and Public Safety staff are aware of who will be in the building. This will also allow for appropriate custodial levels in the bathrooms over break.

To sign up for break housing, go to your MyUHDS account and select “Break Housing”. The deadline has been extended to sign up until Monday, Dec. 9, 2013.

Please remember that winter term meal plan money will not be loaded until January 1, 2014. If you need to add money to your meal plan over the break period, please add it to your Orange Rewards account. Dining center hours for winter break can be found here.

Loft kits available for winter term

Begin the term with a loft kit to maximize the space and functionality in your room! Go to MyUHDS and request your loft kit today! Further information may be found here.

What's your dining plan balance?

Now is the time to be aware of your remaining dining plan balances.  While dining plan balances will carry over to Winter & Spring terms, they will need to be used up by the end of Spring term or they will be lost.  If you carry over too many dining dollars from Fall term into Winter term, you may find it difficult to spend it all in the time allowed.

If you have the Ultimate Plan (biggest) and your current balance is more than $500.00, OR if you are on the Premium Plan (middle-high) and your current balance is more than $470.00, OR if you are on the Preferred Plan (middle-low) and your current balance is more than $410.00, please consider changing to a lower dining plan now before your balance is too low to allow the change.

Minimum balances required to lower your dining plan:
  • From Ultimate to Premium:        218.00
  • From Ultimate to Preferred:       457.00
  • From Ultimate to Basic:              696.00
  • From Premium to Preferred:       239.00
  • From Premium to Basic:              478.00
  • From Preferred to Basic:             239.00
If you are running low on dining dollars but you don’t need the addition of the next higher dining plan, you can choose to add money to your Orange Rewards plan.  Simply log in to https://mycard.oregonstate.edu/  and add whatever amount you need to get you through the rest of the term.

Migrate to OSU Google mail

ONID EMAIL IS MOVING TO GOOGLE STARTING DEC. 26. Student ONID mailboxes are moving to Google Apps for OSU from December 26-31. Beat the rush and opt in now for early access!

When you opt in, we’ll move your ONID mailbox over to Google Mail for you, so you’ll still have your old email messages. Within Google Apps for OSU, you’ll still receive email sent to your @onid.orst.edu address, and your primary email address becomes @onid.oregonstate.edu (in other words, you’re not getting a “gmail” address). You’ll get all the benefits that Google Apps provide: a 30 GB mailbox, advanced tools and functionality, and anytime, anywhere access through Google's mobile apps and web interface.

The OSU Computer Helpdesk will continue to support ONID email and they also support all of Google Apps for OSU. Have questions? Contact them on the website.

Find a carpool with Drive Less Connect

With the term soon coming to a close, many students will be packing up and heading back home for a few weeks. This can be a frustrating and expensive time to travel. Luckily there is a solution that will not only cut back the holiday stress, but also save you money: Drive Less Connect.

DLC is a free tri-state (Oregon, Washington, Idaho) carpooling and trip tracking system. It is easy to use, pairs you with others in the OSU travel network and you can connect it to Facebook. On top of helping you find people with whom you can carpool, you can also use it track all your trips, whether by foot, bike, bus or anything else, and you can even win fantastic prizes roughly on a monthly basis. Just last month, there was a state wide DLC competition that gave out hundreds of dollars of prizes every day in almost every county in Oregon.

So join Drive Less Connect and log your trip home this break. You’ll be entered into a drawing for one of three $10 American Dream Pizza gift cards to be chosen at random in January! If you have questions or want more info, contact Drive Less Connect.

Join Fresh From the Faucet in healthy, sustainable H2O habit

HCI_Water-Campaign_droplet-e1314286889191.jpg (150×222)Fresh From the Faucet, a group led by members from the Nutrition and Dietetics Club, partners with the Healthy Campus Initiative and the OSU BeWell Campaign to encourage students to think about the health, environmental, and economic benefits that can be gained from drinking tap or filtered water rather than drinks bottled in plastic.

The three overarching goals from Fresh From the Faucet are to: 1) improve access to tap and filtered water on campus, 2) decrease the consumption of drinks from plastic bottles, and 3) increase the use of reusable water bottles by members of the Oregon State community.

You might have seen this group distributing water bottles, holding blind water taste tests, or decorating the Fresh From the Faucet water bottles at the New Student Picnic, the SSI’s Sustainability Festival, or the Fall Food Festival. Over 1500 reusable water bottles are now circulating campus because of these events! Interested in learning more about this initiative?  Click here for the full article.

Student Sustainability Initiative accepting grant applications

The Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) is now accepting applications for sustainability project grants for 2013-2014. Up to $21,600 is available for projects this year, and any eligible OSU student or student group can apply for up to $6,000 in funding! Projects that benefit OSU students or demonstrate creative and practical ways for improving social and environmental issues are what the SSI is looking for from your idea. You can visit the SSI website to apply.

Snow days!

Snow days can be fun, but remember to be safe! When walking early in the morning or late at night be careful with the ice that might be present. If you choose to ride a bike, or skis though campus, please be extra cautious.

See campus photos from Friday, Dec. 6 in our Facebook gallery. Share your snow day pics on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtags #snobeavs and #beavernationsnow.

Updated finals schedule

As a result of the campus closure, Oregon State University has worked to reschedule Monday exams. The rescheduling will not be able to address the needs of all students and faculty; however, we have attempted to minimize exam conflicts and accommodate space needs. We recognized that faculty and their students will need some flexibility. Our hope is that these alternatives will provide the time/space needed to address the majority of final exam requirements.

Please review this information carefully to find your newly scheduled finals that were previously scheduled for Monday, December 9 (and some slight changes to Tuesday morning).

Our biggest priority was to move exams into a new timeslot with as few time conflicts for students and faculty as possible while ensuring there was actually space on campus to host the exam. This outcome is not perfect but we kept time conflicts to a minimum.

Important points:
1. No Final Exams previously scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday have been moved; those days remain the same.
2. Several group finals for TUESDAY at 7:30 a.m. had to be moved- they are listed in the new spreadsheet. All other previously scheduled finals for Tuesday remained as is.
3. If you have a new time conflict AS A RESULT OF THE MONDAY CLOSURE, you should attend the scheduled final (that was not moved) and use the newly created make-up options to retake your Monday final. There will be details sent directly to students with new time conflicts to guide them on what to do. These messages will be sent on Monday afternoon- check your email and our website.
4. The spreadsheet  lists the changes made to Monday and Tuesday morning. Please look carefully for your newly scheduled time. However, the most important thing to view is your own student scheduled, which should be updated now. This can be found by looking online at your student schedule. Your final exam dates, times and locations should be updated. Again, if you have a conflict that is a result of these recent changes, you will be receiving instructions tomorrow on what to do.

Checking Your Schedule:
- Login to Online Student Services
- Click on Registration
- Click on View Your Class Schedule by - Day and Time
- Click on all of your classes to confirm your final exam day, time, and location
- This information will be listed below the meeting times for that class.
