FROM THE MINISTER

THIS SUNDAY:  Shadow Into Light: We are in the midst of the season of celebrations.
Of the birth of new hope,
Of the festival of lights,
Of the triumph of freedom.
The darkness of the year is lifting and the time of light grows longer. We have gathered with an anticipation of hope for peace on earth and in our homes.

SECOND SUNDAY COLLECTION: This Sunday, non-pledge donations to our offering will be given to the Minister's Discretionary Fund.  These funds are available to members in need for emergency assistance at any time during the year and are held in confidence. Please see the Minister if you have any questions or if you have need.

THRIFT SHOP

First Unitarian Thrift Hours:

Wednesdays, 9-1pm
Saturdays,     10-2pm

"Come find what you never knew you needed!"

DONATIONS NEEDED: Right now, the Thrift Shop is looking for donations of warm winter coats, boots, mittens & clothing for kids.

This is a reminder that there is absolutely NO smoking allowed anywhere in the building or on church grounds, which includes the garden and the parking lots.  If you must smoke, please move to the perimeter of the grounds, and please remember to deposit your smoking materials in proper receptacles.  Please do not throw cigarette butts on the ground.  Thank you.
JOYS & CONCERNS
Please remember that not everyone is joyful at this time of year.  Some people have little or no family in the area, may be dealing with illness, have fallen on hard times, or have recently lost a loved one.  For many, the holidays are a reminder of a painful time.
Reach out to people in need if you can, but also give them some space if they'd rather not join in your celebrations. Be kind.

CHURCH NEWS
POINSETTIAS
As we do every year, it’s time once again to order Poinsettias for the Sanctuary.  If anyone would like to purchase a poinsettia, please fill out the green form found in the Parish House, the Office or in Sunday's Order of Service and put it in the offering basket with your payment of $20 each.  You may also bring it to the office if you wish.  All orders must be in by Thursday, December 12th.
SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM

Giving Tree: We will, again, include a Giving Tree as part of our holiday festivities.  If you’d like to take a tag from the Giving Tree, please find a gift that is appropriate for the child (most of the cards have very specific requests) and return the gift, unwrapped, as soon as possible, but no later than December 15th. Please return the tag with the gift.  We’ll have a wrapping party that week to festively wrap each child’s gifts.
Questions related to this project may be directed to Cecelia Weeks, chair of the Giving Tree committee, at 508-992-3713.

FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS

December is all about the children.  For this festive month, please bring in child-friendly foods, such as mac & cheese, pasta, crackers, lunchbox snack packs, etc.  Let’s show the kids how much we care.

As always, thanks to Ken Peirce for faithfully bringing
donations to the local food pantries!! ~Linda

DOOR ISSUES
If you have attempted to come into the church this week, you may have found that to be difficult.  We are experiencing "technical difficulties" with the electronic keypad on the back parking lot door.  At the same time, the key lock on it is not working well (it sticks and/or doesn't engage the lock and/or won't release your key!) AND the door itself is troublesome to close properly and is also falling apart.  We are aware of all these issues and are working on it.
We know it is a major inconvenience for the many groups that meet here not to be able to gain access and we apologize for the inconvenience.  We should have it all set within a week or two.
In the meantime, if you have an outside key, please use either the Thrift Shop Door or the Office Door to enter the building then go up the stairs (through the Thrift Shop) to the Parish House.  If you do not have a key and you've tried your code but are locked out, please call the office number (508-994-9686) and leave a message with your name & callback number.  Your message will be forwarded and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Lastly, when you leave the building, please be sure to close the Parking Lot Door all the way until it latches.  Give it a tug to make sure it's closed securely.
Thank you for your patience in this matter.

HYMNAL DRIVE

We are still trying to reach our goal of 60 new hymnals. We have purchased 30 of them so far.  Please keep the donations coming! If you have donated a hymnal and would like a bookplate with a dedication placed inside the cover, please call or email Linda in the office to let her know how you’d like the bookplate to read.

Sincerely, Karen Andersen,
Religious Services Committee Chair

PHOTO DIRECTORY
In an effort to help put names to faces, we will begin taking photos for a new directory this Sunday. After you've had your turkey, we invite you to take moment to stop at our photo booth. We will be taking photos for about three weeks and anticipate the directory in January. Thank you for taking the time to make this possible.
