2013 MECA Holiday Window | Through January 14, 2014, Maine College of Art Porteous Front Window
On display at Maine College of Art, 522 Congress Street, Portland, Maine, through January 14, 2014. Senior Graphic Design student
Cassie Amicone '14 created a three-dimensional installation for the Maine College of Art's annual holiday window display as part of her internship with
Beth Taylor '08, Assistant Director of Marketing and Design. The installation is constructed with just under 1,000 cardboard pizza bases and 1,000 paper plates, and was built with assistance from classmates and friends. Through this atmospheric and celebratory display, visitors will experience the sensitivity to craft and design that evolved from Amicone's two-dimensional design.
FROM THE GROUND: ARCHITECTURE OF A FAMILY, Deborah A. Bates '83 (1938 - 2013) | Through February 20, Charles C. Thomas Gallery, 2nd floor, Porteous Building
Bates incorporated various techniques in her work, including collage, drawing, and painting in order to highlight the relationship between the structural geometry of architecture and the geometric shapes that represent shared DNA. Finding particular inspiration in the fact that a maternal line of women bestowed upon her family four generations of continuity, Bates grounded her art in personal experience and delved into her consciousness to process the experience of her homecoming. In so doing, Bates acknowledged the constancy of women and argued that their silent contributions do not go unnoticed.
