Surf Club News

Hi Clubbies

With the surf season well underway and the Christmas season approaching fast, we've got plenty of news to share!

As many of you will be aware the club celebrated its 75th Jubilee with a series of events over Labour Weekend. It was fantastic to see so many past and current clubbies together reminiscing and sharing stories at different stages of the weekend.

Some highlights of the weekend included the induction of two new life members- Kerry Delaney and Karl Campbell. The titles represent the hard work, dedication and passion that these two respected individuals have shown to the club and the club wish to congratulate you both.

The Jubilee dinner on the Saturday night was also hugely successful and enjoyed by all. The Beat Girls provided for those with their dancing shoes on, hours of dance floor action.  While the ice-filled surf boat bar kept patrons hydrated throughout the night. MC Nick Rado kept attendees entertained, accompanied by several speakers including Patron John Burke followed with the appearance of motivational speaker and Titahi Bay clubbie Jamie Fitzgerald, well-known for his role in TV’s ‘First Crossings’ programme.

A huge thanks to Life Member Norman Bowers who attended our 75th Jubilee celebrations and kindly donated this trophy to our club.

In International news, Titahi Bay clubbie Steven Kent has returned from representing New Zealand once again. Steve competed for NZ Surf Life Saving Team at the recent BeNe Cup (in Belgium and Netherlands) and was named Top Male Competitor. He went on to the German Cup in late November in Warendorf, Germany, and won Top Male Competitor in that competition. He set National Records in the 100m 'Manikin Carry with Fins', and in 50m 'Manikin Carry'. In the 200m Obstacle Race, Steve was a convincing winner – setting a European Record in the process. Steve has competed at three German Cup competitions since 2007 and is currently in Australia (on the Gold Coast) swim training.  Congratulations Steve!

Junior Surf News
The Junior Surf season has kicked off with a hiss and a roar! Our Nippers now have two competitions under their belts and if the results of these are anything to go by, Titahi Bay can look forward to a rewarding season across all age groups. Go the mini green machines! The Sunday trainings are also running successfully at Titahi Bay with large turnouts, heaps of fun, not a lot of hot water but plenty of yummy sausages!
Introducing Nick Mulcahy...This year the club are thrilled to have Nick on board as the Club Coach for the 2013/14 season.
Nick has been involved in surf lifeguarding and surf sports for over 13 years. Over this time he has been a volunteer and/or professional lifeguard at several beaches in New Zealand and Australia. Nick has been  involved in surf lifeguarding and surf sports at Titahi Bay since 2006/07. This has included paddling board in the Open Men’s Taplin which won gold at the 2009 SLS New Zealand Championships.

Nick has competed and/or coached in most surf sports disciplines, including: board, ski, swim, ironman, beach events, canoe and IRB. Surf sports Information
Training
There has been a great turnout for club training over the past few months, and we have built up a solid training group of Ocean Athletes, Juniors and Seniors. The training sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45-7:30 pm, and Sunday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 pm.

High visibility vests
High visibility vests must be worn at all training sessions. They are also required to be worn at surf sports competitions. You can purchase a vest from Suzette McVicar for $13.00. Please contact Suzette at admin@titahibayslsc.org.nz

Whitehorse Competition # 1: Lyall Bay
A small contingent competed at Lyall Bay on the 23rd November including some craft paddlers and the U19 Women’s Boat Crew. Everyone competed well in the first carnival of the season, with Lizzy and Kathryn Bunckenburg coming home first and second in the well contested 2 km beach run.

Whitehorse Competition # 2: Titahi Bay
The second Whitehorse event of the season will be held at Titahi Bay on Saturday 21st December. It would be great if we could get a good turnout at this event. There are two rounds of most events, so it is a good chance to get some racing experience. The flyer is on the notice board down at the club, or can be found here:
 http://www.surflifesaving.org.nz/media/262445/20131221_whitehorse2_titahibay.pdf

Reminder: Competitors are expected to attend all local events if they intend to compete at Nationals.  No local events = No Nationals.

Central Regional Championships: Oakura, Taranaki
The Central Regional Championships are being held at Oakura Beach in Taranaki on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th January. This is a good event to attend, both for those who are new to surf sports and those with aspirations of placing at the New Zealand SLS Championships in March.
If you would like to attend please discuss with Nick as soon as possible, as entries close on the 29th December. The competition details can be found on the noticeboard at the club, or here: http://www.surflifesaving.org.nz/media/262363/20140111_crcs_entrycircular_v02.pdf
If you have any queries regarding training or competitions please don’t hesitate to contact Nick at nick.mulcahy.nz@gmail.com or 027 780 0096.

The club would like to acknowledge Mana Community Grants Foundation for their continued support of Titahi Bay SLSC.  They recently approved a grant that has enabled us to purchase an IRB Hull and lifesaving equipment which will used extensively by members and benefit the wider community.

Surf Lifeguarding Information
The surf lifeguarding service commenced patrols on the 30th November. Here is a brief update and some reminders to all lifeguards:

Patrols
Thank you to all of who are patrolling at Titahi Bay this season. We have six patrol teams, each with 8-9 surf lifeguards, as well as a number of replacement surf lifeguards.

Please ensure you check your availability for your patrols, particularly in late December and January, as the beach gets busy. If you cannot make your patrol please ensure you swap with another member or organise a replacement - this is your responsibility.

Please advise your Patrol Captain of any replacements. If you do not turn up, or organise a replacement you put your patrol team under pressure, and limit the service we can provide to the public using Titahi Bay.

On patrols please ensure you follow the instructions of your Patrol Captain; they are all experienced, and every patrol member needs to work as part of the team.

Reminder:  To compete at Nationals, it is mandatory that all competitors complete a minimum of 20  patrolling hours within the season.
Scorching Bay and Riversdale
Worser Bay Life Saving Club has asked if any members are available to assist with patrols at Scorching Bay on Public Holidays* this summer. The dates include: 26 December, 1 January, 2 January, and 20 January. If you are available, and keen to help out, please contact Nick Mulcahy to discuss. *Regional Lifeguards cover these days at Titahi Bay.

Riversdale Surf Life Saving Club has asked if any members are available to assist with patrols in February and March. It is a great opportunity to meet members from another club, and have some fun on the Wairarapa Coast. If you are interested please get in touch with Nick to discuss.
Refreshers
We had a great turnout for refreshers on the 24th November, and it was great to see everyone complete all components of the refresher to a high level.

For all those who have not yet completed their refreshers please contact Nick Mulcahy to organise. You are required to be refreshed prior to the 31st January or you will be unable to patrol or enter surf sports events.
Awards
Congratulations to Callum Watts-Pointer, Troi Alosio, Jaco Booyse, Stephanie Watts-Pointer, Sam Findlater, Finella Sweeney, Andre van der Walt, and Carl Jones who gained their Surf Lifeguard Award recently! Jess Limbrick did a great job bringing them all up to speed.

Congratulations also must go to J’Adoube Elkington, DJ Stapleton and Craig Stapleton for gaining their IRB Crew Award and Senior Lifeguard: IRB Drivers Award. We also have a few members who are close to gaining their awards.

Craig Stapleton attended the National Lifeguard School in Taranaki over the weekend, which was great to see, and highlights the increasing capability of our service.
Upcoming courses
Nick will be running an IRB Crew and Senior Lifeguard: IRB Drivers course every Sunday from 3:00-4:30 pm, starting on the 19th January. If you would like to take part in this course, or any other course, please contact Nick.
You can find information on all courses here: http://www.surflifesaving.org.nz/education/member-education/lifeguard-education/

If you have any queries regarding patrols, refreshers, or courses please don’t hesitate to contact Nick at nick.mulcahy.nz@gmail.com or 027 780 0096.

The club would like to acknowledge Infinity Foundation Limited for their support of Titahi Bay SLSC and approval of a recent grant to purchase new boards!

Fundraising
The club would like to thank all those who supported our 2013 season Quiz Night and Raffle.  Congratulations to all our winners!

In the lead up to Christmas some of our clubbies are enjoying another fundraising effort in association with North City Shopping Centre and Santa Claus! Some of our Junior (and not-so-junior) members were privileged enough to be involved in the ‘rescue’ of Santa from Titahi Bay after an unfortunate incident involving a  boogie board…Luckily Santa was brought back to the mall to the delight of hundreds of young children and Titahi Bay members were out in full force in the crowds collecting donations from shoppers.

On Thursday 19th of December, Junior and Senior club members will be rostered on in the North City Shopping Centre collecting donations for Surf Lifesaving.  If you are a Senior or Junior lifeguard and haven't put your name on the roster please get in touch with Paul McVicar ASAP.
Phone: 0272481445.

A big thanks to clubbie Georgia McLaren who helped put our newsletter together.

Keep safe in the water and have a great Xmas and New Year!
