The View from the Deanery

Last Thursday evening the small dining area of the 4th floor restaurant was transformed into a private dining room resplendent in red tablecloths and tea candles. On the ‘big screen’ was the NFL game. Over the few hours, there was a succession of delicious food and wine: southern style soup, turkey with ‘all the fixins’ washed down with red or white wine, followed by homemade pumpkin, apple and pecan pie. Many thanks to the LSE catering staff who threw themselves into the preparation and serving of the dinner with great enthusiasm.

This was the fifth year in which we have held Thanksgiving Dinner ‘General Course style’. About 60 of you were able to join in the celebrations and it was great to be able to provide a little ‘touch of home’ whilst you are here at LSE for the year.

A number of people took photos at the dinner. If you send a couple of your favourites along to Yohei Guy (y.guy@lse.ac.uk) we can get them put up on the GC Facebook page.

If you were unable to make this social event, fear not. There are other events that will be taking place over the coming months, including an end of term event being organised by Yvon Brousseau, your recently elected ‘President’. Stay tuned to your emails and the GC Facebook page for details.

Is Europe Working?

Professor Sir Christopher Pissarides

Professor Sir Chistopher Pissarides presents his inaugural lecture as Regius Professor, a prestigious title recently bestowed by the Queen to mark the Diamond Jubilee. A Regius Professorship is a rare privilege with only two created in the past century in recognition of exceptionally high quality of teaching and research at an institution. In 2010 Professor Pissarides was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on the analysis of markets with search frictions.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 12th December at 6.30pm in the Old Theatre. Students can enter the online ballot for tickets from 6pm on Thursday 5th December.

The Future of London within the UK
Boris Johnson

The State Of The Union series has seen people from Alex Salmond to Martin McGuiness and Michael Heseltine discuss the future of the United Kingdom and one part within the greater whole. In this event Boris Johnson will discuss the role and future of London within the Union.

The lecture will take place on Monday 9th December at 6.30pm in the Old Theatre. Students can enter the online ballot for tickets from 6pm Monday 2nd December.

I'm Never Shopping Here Again
Creepy Kinetic Art Exhibition

For something a little bit different, a collaborative art exhibition featuring little bird-men, sculptures, swaying mannequins, dark fairytale art and more can be seen in the tunnels by Waterloo Station. Described as a somewhat unsettling but engaging series of displays, this creepy exhibition is yet another example of the variety of art and culture that London has to offer. The exhibition runs until the 12th December.

Collider
Science Museum

The Science Museum in South Kensignton are currently hosting a temporary exhibition about the largest scientific experiment ever constructed, CERN's Hadron Collider. Go behind the scenes through video, sound art and real artefacts to learn about the subatomic world and the Engineers on a quest to answer the impossible.

Frostival

This Christmas the London Eye bring you Frostival on the Southbank. Frostival is a celebration that includes an ice rink, blue lit capsules (on the London Eye itself) and expert ice carving demonstrations every weekend from now until the 29th December. Good fun all round so don't miss out!
