Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
If we are faithless,
he will remain faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.
(2 Timothy 2: 11-13 NIV)
I don’t like the feeling of uncertainty. This is unfortunate, because it doesn’t take much looking to see that life often takes unforeseen turns. Whether it’s an illness, a death in the family, dear friends that move away, or a husband deliberating a call to serve elsewhere, there are many events that can drain our energy, cause us to cross off planned events on the calendar, and leave us wondering just what tomorrow will bring.
During those times it’s easy for me to focus in on myself and question God’s will in my life. After all, how can everything be working out for my good when it seems so very wrong?
The Apostle Paul thoroughly understood how events here on Earth can be disruptive. In fact, he wrote this letter to Timothy when he was imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. Paul knew his days on Earth were quickly coming to an end. And he also knew that Timothy and other Christians would continue to face the heavy burden of carrying on in this world.
How appropriate, then, that Paul points Timothy and us to the one true source of certainty. God, and his perfect love, are unchanging. Even as we fail, God remains faithful. His promise of forgiveness holds true on a daily basis. His assurance that after enduring this life, believers will reign with him in heaven, is a beautiful thought.
These promises offer deep, reassuring comfort in my daily life. Coated in Christ’s forgiveness, I can trust that God will indeed work all events toward my good, according to his purpose. As I face unexpected twists, I will cling to the certainty of our perfect God and his promises. I can be sure that tomorrow, while my path may change on this Earth, God will stay the same.
Ask the Lord
Dear Lord, Thank you for your constant faithfulness. Forgive me for the times I have not been faithful to you, and have doubted your promises to work everything out for my good. Grant me peace throughout today, confident that your hand is actively overseeing my life. Amen.
