Woollahra Village Weekend 2013

We had a wonderful time, we hope you did too – it was definitely Sydney’s ‘Best kept Secret’! The village community and others came to share 3 days of fashion, food and fun!

We celebrated excellence - Anne Schofield and Robert Burton were awarded the Recognition of Excellence Awards for 2013. To honour their life achievements our Retrospective Photographic exhibition at Dickerson Gallery and sponsored by Di Jones Real Estate and Peter Weiss takes you on a journey - ‘Past and Present” Collections – Collectors and Designers – the exhibition runs until 8 December at Dickerson Gallery 10.00 am – 5.00 pm daily (closed Mondays).

Friday started with Australian Literary and Numeracy Foundatrion ambassador and Development Director of Generation One, Jeremy Donovan, walking us through his life story, his achievements and the love of this country, its people and its heritage – we are either saltwater or freshwater people.  He then turned to his didgeridoo after singing in his language and the crowd was overwhelmed with the delicate and haunting music he produced.

Jeremy launched our Wall of Hands outside Reads of Woollahra and this followed on through the whole weekend. It will be outside Reads of Woollahra every Saturday until Christmas so come and make your mark. A $5.00 donation for each hand will go to the Australian Literary and Numeracy Foundation.

“The message is clear, if we are going to end the disparity we need to work together,” said Jeremy.

Saturday took us away from community and moved into the world of Fashion – the powerhouses of Australian Fashion came together for our Fashion Forums. Collette Dinnigan opened the day in her conversation with Caroline Baum; Collette generously shared her life and times in the industry and an intimate and honest look into her future plans and desires.

Everyone queued to get their copy of ‘Obsessive Creative’ personally signed beside the peonies.

Sunday was all about Food - Charles McKean started the day with an excellent forum on food and photography - Indira Naidoo followed on Kitchen Gardening - look out for some pop up gardens in the village soon! Richard Cornish chatted to Martin Palmer, Martins Seafoods. Griff Pamment, Luxe Cafe and Audra Morrice took us through sourcing protein in their talk 'From the Farm to the Sea' - finally our local Food Guru discussed cuisine with Arthur Hatzis from Nostimo, Edward Forrest from Costis Famous Fish Co and Ravi Sandhu from La Scala on Jersey.

The Christmas Farmers' Market was full of all the best things in Woollahra - food stalls, gifts, herbs and beautiful homewares.

The kids joined in the busking, drew with chalk all over the car park and there was also a pop up 'Best in Show' for the locals.

See you next year, if not before, in the Village!

Dr Joseph Rizk
Look your best over this holiday season – free cosmetic consultation
With the holiday season around the corner, now is the best time for some facial rejuvenation,so that when summer is at its peak you can still look like an effortless beauty.

A popular procedure for women this time of year is a surgical eye lift (blepharoplasty). This is performed to take away excess skin on your upper and/or lower eyelid resulting in a more bright and youthful appearance.

Dr Rizk performs this procedure in his Woollahra rooms in 40-60 minutes and full results are visible just after 2 weeks.

An alternative to this is injecting botox above the brow to create a non-surgical brow lift.

Real estate

Di Jones Real Estate
Your update from Di Jones Real Estate
As spring comes to a close, activity levels remain strong and look set to continue right up until Christmas with our last auction scheduled for Tuesday the 17th December. Buyer commitment is at an all-time high, with auction clearance rates consistently sitting at or above 80% – the same level since winter. We’ve also noticed diminishing sale time frames with properties selling prior to scheduled auction dates as buyers act quickly and competitively to secure property.

We will finish the year on a high having recorded a strong spring selling season. We look forward to seeing this momentum continue as we move into 2014, with several properties already scheduled for auction in the New Year.

In the month of October we held our annual Matthew Jones Award: Children’s Art Sydney, at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Paddington. We had 81 primary school aged children participate in the Award, creating artworks to the theme of “My best day ever”.

The school based entrants received $1000 for first prize and $500 for second prize, donated by Di Jones Real Estate, to be directed to the schools arts or disability programs. All first and second place winners also received a prize pack for themselves which includes a group session with artist Ella Barclay.

Through the sale of the artworks and raffle tickets, the Award this year raised $6901. This brings the total raised and donated to over $52,000 over the past 5 years.

For more information about the Award, and to stay up to date in 2014, please like the Matthew Jones Foundation Facebook page which you can find here.

In early 2014 we relocate to Level 1, Queens Court, 118 Queen Street, Woollahra. This is the current Sotheby’s site and we are so excited to be moving into such a beautiful building with such fabulous surrounding stores – and of course the new Luxe café which has replaced Bills.

Finally, we would like to send our warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday period, and a happy New Year.

Woollahra Festival 2014
After three hugely successful Woollahra Festivals (2010, 2011, 2012), the festival directors and the committee have decided to regroup and investigate new ways to serve our audience in the coming years.

The festival was innovative in several ways:
- it combined a spoken word program dealing with current ideas and major global issues with an exciting and original performance program
- it drew on the great wealth of local talent of performers, writers, leaders in politics and the professions to speak or perform and included students from our leading tertiary colleges in original works
- it delivered a high standard of program through a grass roots network

Over the course of three festivals the audience more than doubled from approximately 6,000 in 2010 to 15,000 in 2012.

The Festival committee will continue to find new and exciting ways of stimulating and invigorating our community and our audience with imaginative and unexpected performance and new approaches which will explore creative thinking, ideas and important social, economic and political issues.

The web site has been updated and will display further news as plans are confirmed. If you would like to review past programs and a selection of photographs from the festival, these can all be found on the web site.

The festival was delivered through Woollahra Festivals Inc., a not-for-profit association (and deductible gift recipient – DGR) that was established specifically to serve the interests of the whole community.  Our not-for-profit status meant that we were not aligned with any specific interest or business group and that we could create a program without fear or favour.

Finally, the Committee would like to acknowledge the important financial support that the festival received from a handful of generous donors, from Woollahra Municipal Council and from the friends group.
