This Week's Holiday Bookstore Bashes
The Curved House is hosting holiday festivities on Wednesday night at Shakespeare & Sons, complete with guest artist Mark Garry (8-11pm, free tickets). Then, on Sunday the 15th, Berlin's iconic SAND Journal will take over the bookstore for a bookswap and for Glühwein-influenced lit trivia (6pm, open admission.)

Readux Books: A Choice Holiday Gift
You won't pay more for each book than you would for a cappuccino, and you're likely to discover a wave of new foreign authors in these thin volumes. Readux Books, which releases twelve titles yearly, is a small publishing house specializing in translated literature. Save yourself a holiday shopping trip and buy their first batch of issues online. After all, stories of 1920s Berlin make for good reading by the fireplace.

Jonathan Franzen's Foray into Translation

Love him or hate him, American literary celebrity Jonathan Franzen just set foot in new territory: German translation. In The Kraus Project, Franzen translates two essays by the "arguably megolomaniacal" Austrian writer Karl Kraus. German translator and Berlin resident Katy Derbyshire offers up her verdict in The Quarterly Conversation: "Not being an experienced translator, [Franzen] doesn’t automatically reach for the German-to-English bag of tricks...That’s not necessarily a bad thing."
