and then the refuge of the portal to Smalls Jazz Club - the warmth of bodies, whiskey, certain odors wafting upward and then... music!
Smalls NEW YEARS EVE!
Please join us for our annual New Year’s celebration bringing in 2014. Our doors open at 9PM and the music will start at 9:30 PM. The Smalls Jazz Club All Stars will perform and there will be an after-hours show as well.
We've sold nearly 30 seats and we're only going to sell 50 seats up to midnight. Tickets include 2 champagne cocktails (or drink of your choice) and a selection of hors d'oeuvres. So far the band is Lennie Cuje on vibraphone, Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Ned Goold on tenor, Jon Roche on bass, Clifford Barbaro on drums, Milton Suggs singing and Marion Cowings also singing and emceeing the evening. It will be a blast.
Ticket prices for reserved seats (9 PM to Midnight) are $100.00 per seat. We will do a general open admission after midnight at our regular ticket price of $20.00 depending on space.
All tickets must be purchased in advance via Paypal.

Monday:
We start our week off with an old friend – Steve Lyman who is coming in with a dynamic quartet featuring Chase Baird on tenor, Aaron Parks on piano and Joe Martin on bass. Following Steve is our resident artist Ari Hoenig and his quartet with the amazing Gilad Hekselman on guitar, Shai Maestro on piano and Orlando Le Flemming on bass.
Tuesday:
Be prepared for an amazing and unusual Tuesday starting with a Tap Dance Sextet. Dancer Joseph Wiggan is one of the top tap-dancers in the country these days and spends most of his time touring with Circe de Soleil. Joseph organized this show which features two other dancers – Derick Grant & Jason Samuels-Smith. The rhythm sections is myself (Spike Wilner) on piano, Jonathan Michel on bass and Andrew Atkinson on drums. Following Joseph is Logan Richardson and his group SHIFT. This band showcases the fascinating piano playing of Sullivan Fortner. Harish Raghavan is on bass and Tommy Crane on drums.
Wed & Thur:
For Wednesday and Thursday for our 9:30 PM show, Harish Raghavan takes the lead and invites Logan Richardson to join his group. Also in the band is Matt Stevens on guitar, Fabian Almazan on piano and Eric Harland on drums. Our “Round Midnight†concert showcases an original talent on the tenor saxophone Noah Preminger who’s coming in with an excellent quartet which features the excellent Frank Kimbrough on piano, Matt Clohesy on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums.
Fri & Sat:
This weekend we have some piano legends in the house starting on Friday at 7:30 PM with bassist Phil Palombi’s trio which features Don Friedman and drum legend Eliot Zigmund. Saturday the 7:30 PM show features the excellent Dave Glasser on alto sax and his quartet with Larry Ham on piano, Dave Robaire on bass and Carl Allen on drums. Our 10:30 PM show for both nights presents the legendary Freddie Redd and an excellent quintet organized by alto saxophonist Amanda Sedgwick. Also in the group is the amazing trumpetist Dwayne Clemons, Murray Wall on bass and drum legend Jimmy Wormworth.
Sunday:
Our Sunday afternoon showcase features drummer Lamy Istrefi, who is bringing in his friend and legend David Liebman to play tenor sax and Diallo House to play bass. Following them at 7:30 PM is guitarist Ed Laub. Ed is usually joined by Bucky Pizzarelli but this week has invited the excellent Howard Alden to join him in duet. At 10 PM is the legendary Johnny O’Neal and then our “Round Midnight†set showcases the fantastic Dmitry Baevsky and his quartet with Jeb Patton, David Wong & Joe Strasser.
