Our recent Holiday Happiness Class had a visiting professor, Leslie Brady. She thrilled us with her knowledge and gave us lots of tips on centerpieces. Dean Brady proved it’s within everyone’s grasp to beautify their table just by pruning the shrubs in their yard, or even better yet, their neighbor’s yard (while they are out). The Deans had never seen tiny arrangements underneath a overturned wine glass. Several of these down the table would be a really great for those mismatched wine glasses that can accrue.
Jean Anderson just came out with her new book, From a Southern Oven, which made us rush to the shelves to consult all her other books. What jumped out was her Portuguese turkey (The Food of Portugal), with the stuffing under the skin. Jean's turkey bought to our minds our current favorite lunch, the chicken at NoMad Hotel in New York City, where they serve whole-roasted chicken for two, foie gras, black truffle & brioche stuffed under, you guessed it, the skin!
Shopping Spree
You are going to thank us forever when we give you this tip: Shop first thing in the morning during the holidays. Getting to the store first thing in the morning will ensure that the aisles are crowd free and lines have not have time to form at the register. Added benefits are that your spouse can enjoy an extra cup of coffee while entertaining the children, and you have not run out of energy yet. If you are anticipating large groups of guests, going to the store for four or five days in a row breaks the shopping down to manageable amounts. Lists are crucial at this time of year for stable mental health, since you are being pulled in nine thousand directions and you will not remember everything you need to buy. Just like Santa himself, you need to check those lists twice, possibly three times, and keep a pad of paper nearby for constant editing. In the dappled sun of early morning you will zip up and down the aisles, unfettered and free, while later, your tardy neighbors will be hunched over their carts, their misery radiating off of them like a hot star.
