Big pitch

The Entrepreneurship Club and the Horn Program in Entrepreneurship have announced Udwell the winner of the Pitch Party competition. Armed with only their wits and startup ideas, 20 student teams gathered to compete against each other at the annual Pitch Party competition held last Friday at UD. Yael Bloom and Tali Cohen, founders of Udwell, took home the top prize of $1,000 to further expand and grow their business.


Bank At School

The Bank At School program teaches students about the importance of saving money by pairing schools with local banks and helping kids open savings accounts within their school buildings.


Technology in the classroom

 Alexander Brown, instructor of business administration, and Anuradha Sivaraman, assistant professor of business administration, believe that using Twitter for their courses helps keep the classroom discussions contemporary and increases class participation.


Katalin Takacs Haynes, Business Administration

"Finding Virtue in the run of Andalusia's olive oil mills," an article on a study co-authored by Katalin Takacs Haynes, business administration, addresses how family ownership affects companies' risk-taking behavior and appeared in El Pais (Spain).


 


Charles Elson, Director, Weinberg Center

Charles Elson, Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, discussed Fed Ex's CEO in a Bloomberg article, "Loeb's FedEx Stake Heightens Focus on Smith Succession." He was also cited in a variety of other media outlets this month, including comments on the proposed Media General merger (Richmond Times Dispatch) and on a payout given to Dell board and executives as part of a buyout deal (Bloomberg).

 



Burton Abrams, Professor, Economics

Burt Abrams' work, “Inside the Nixon Administration: The Secret Diary of Arthur Burns, 1969-1974,” and “How Richard Nixon Pressured Arthur Burns: Evidence from the Nixon Tapes,” which appeared in the Journal of Economic Perspectives (Fall 2006), was cited in a syndicated column of The Post and Courier by George F. Will.
