Another caffeine fix for your brain

Issue #2

11.30.2013

Welcome to a glimpse inside the head of Coffeechug

This is the second issue the Coffeechug newsletter. I have learned a great deal since the first issue.

The goal is to continue to provide some insights into things I am reading, listening, and working on. Always open to thoughts and feedback.

Thank you so much if you are a subscriber. Thank you even more if you spread the word.

What I Am Thinking and Learning This Week

  • Ideas are a waste if not acted upon. A goal of mine to continue to act upon the ideas brewing in my head. Otherwise they are just thoughts and who really cares?
  • Listened to 99% Invisible by Roman Mars episode 95 discussing design in sci-fi. One word: Mindblown(not sure if one word, but I made it one word). I am looking at design in all sorts of places. Listen to this again and again!
  • I also started checking out Radiolab podcast after reading about them in Todd Henry's book Die Empty. I am intrigued by how they mix and weave stories together. I was so entranced by the stories. So coffee loving good. A book worth buying and a podcast worth listening.
  • Are you not thinking about the future of Predictive Computing? What? You did not know I would be talking about this? Perhaps you are tired of typing the same mistake into your phone and would like your phone to be smart enough to adapt? Then read Om Malik and his article in Fast Company
  • Finally finished up my nominations for Edubloggers Awards. So many great people in my PLN. Very hard to decide this year. I left out some amazing people. Who did you nominate?
  • I will start to exercise and worry about fitting into my pants after Thanksgiving. It is time to go all in!
  • Testing out wakerupper.com which allows you to create your own wake up calls for when you travel or anything you want to use it for. Pretty handy and quite simple to use. Test it out.
  • During this Thanksgiving holiday, I learned that my varsity basketball coach is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It reminds me that we are here for a short amount of time. It also reminds me to do a much better job thanking people who have helped challenge me and move me along my journey to being a better person. We are so busy in day to day life that we must not forget to take time to thank those who have helped us. Who will you connect with this week? I added this image as Coach Johnson always preached MTXE (Mental Toughness Extra Effort). Weird how just this week I pulled this workbook out this for a game and now the news. Coincidence? What is your message?
  • If you missed my last podcast where I talk with author and writer Clive Thompson about his latest book, Smarter Than You Think, then you will want to find time to listen. He shares some really amazing ideas and facts about the future of education and life with new emerging technologies and literacies.

What books am I reading?

I reread "Die Empty" by Toddy Henry to prepare for upcoming podcast

I reread my notes and excerpts of "Smarter Than You Think" by Clive Thompson

Started reading "Rework" by Jason Fried. I had to stop because I had to buy a copy so I could mark the book with notes, highlights, and stickers. The first 50 pages literally made my brain explode and challenged so many thoughts I currently have developed.

Finished up "David and Goliath" by Malcom Gladwell. Working on review now. Must process the information. I liked the book, but not necessariily a favorite. Yes, there I admit. The first one to not glorify the book. Looking to have a book discussion on this book via Google Hangout for future podcast. Interested? Let me know.

Next up to read?
"Fascinate" by Sally Hogshead. She just moved to my top ten favorite thinkers after listening to an interview of her and studying her work.

"Invent To Learn" by Sylvia Martinez. I bought this book the day it came out. Have not read it. Shame on me. Must read with all the Arduino work I am doing.

What else should I add to my TBR pile?
