Former Pupils' Newsletter, December 2013

Dear Old Lathallian,

Lathallan School Former Pupils' Newsletter, December 2013

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Lathallan Former Pupils and friends of the school!

2013 at Lathallan

It has been a very busy year at Lathallan School and we end 2013 educating over 190 pupils across Junior and Senior School. Our former Head Boy settled into his first term at Cambridge, our Senior School played on a Rugby and Netball tour in Dubai and also volunteered at the Samara Game Reserve in South Africa. The Lathallan School Pipe Band travelled to Belgium to compete, and Pipe Major, Alexander Sanger was invited back to pipe at the Gathering of the Soil service at The Menin Gate, Ypres on 11 November in the presence of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a huge honour for Alexander and Lathallan.

The new sports Pavilion and the Raymond Burton Clock Tower was opened in October and back in April we welcomed the Year of 1963 and their guests back to the castle for a very memorable reunion dinner.

Other highlights include the Civilianship project 'Howe O'The Mearns' with the Maggie Law Museum in Gourdon, Eco Days, Senior Ball, School sports day, trips to Clachnaben, a recent Junior trip to Deep Sea World and to see the 'Lion King' in Edinburgh, Duke of Edinburgh awards, Mini Highland Games, Junior School Play- 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' set in 1980's, Annual Rugby 7s Tournament,  Presentation Day, Lathallan Parents Association 'Hollywood Ball' and the inaugural Lathallan Pipe Band Minis.

New Sports Pavilion and The Raymond Burton Clock Tower

Former Lathallan Pupil Rob Wainwright (1973-1978) and Former Scotland Rugby Captain opened the news sports pavilion. Rob is pictured above left with Mr Richard Toley, Headmaster on the right.

The pavilion has been funded largely thanks to private and corporate donations and our own Parents Association, and it will be a major benefit to our own pupils and the many visiting sports teams against who Lathallan competes so well during the year.

It will also be an asset to the greater community as the school plays host to a number of sporting and social events including cross-country meets, the annual Mini-Highland Games, archery competitions and the annual Rugby 7s Tournament, attended by over 500 people.

Representatives from the local press, the local authority, School Board of Governors, pupils, parents and businesses attended on the 21st and we are looking forward to this exciting new chapter in the life of Lathallan.

The Clock Tower is named The Raymond Burton Clock Tower recognising the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1913 and his service to Lathallan School from 1950 to 1975.

Lathallan Foundation

The school has ambitious plans to improve and develop its facilities and to enhance the experience of Lathallan pupils, staff and visitors.
We also plan to make a Lathallan education more accessible to gifted children whose families might not be in a financial position to send them. Therefore we wish to create more bursaries and scholarships.
Our fees alone will not allow us to achieve all that we plan in order to ensure that the reputation of Lathallan as a school of educational excellence continues to grow into the future. That is why we have developed the Lathallan Foundation.

It will be a focus of fundraising for school projects, and we are asking former pupils, former and present families, former staff and all friends of Lathallan to give what they can to the Lathallan Foundation. If you are able to support the school in any way, please get in touch.

If you wish to meet with the Headmaster, Mr Richard Toley, to discuss the Lathallan Foundation and how you may help, Please contact Andrea Watt, Head of Development and Alumni Relations to arrange a meeting. andreawatt@lathallan.org.uk 01561 362220 and indeed for any enquiries about the Foundation, Bursaries, Legacy giving and ongoing support.
