Volleyball season ends in national semifinals

VolleyballAfter defeating No. 2 Hope College on its home court in the Elite Eight, the magical tournament run ended for the Pointers as they fell to third-ranked California Lutheran University in the national semifinals. Falkinhams visit with scholarship recipient

Falkinhams Senior Kerry Palmer, recipient of the 2013 Ken and Sandy Falkinham Scholarship, was able to spend time with Ken and Sandy who were visiting campus on Nov. 21. The Falkinhams established their School of Education scholarship in 2007 after realizing just how difficult it is to find the funds necessary to attend an institution of higher education. They hope this scholarship allows the recipient to further their studies while receiving some assistance in lowering their financial obligations. Sure did for Kerry! Read More

Business students complete ToastMasters program

Falkinhams SBE students Kyle Schalow and Kirsten Algiers recently completed the six-week Toastmasters SpeechCraft program at Sentry Insurance. Participants develop their communication skills by performing various elements of Toastmasters such as evaluation, impromptu response to questions regarding various topics, timing presentations, listening, and leading as Toastmaster. Loy co-authors book on effects of suicide of a parent

Losing a Parent “Losing a Parent to Suicide,” a book aimed at helping children cope with the suicide of a parent, has been co-authored by Marty Loy, dean of the College of Professional Studies and Amy Boelk, an associate professor of sociology and social work. It is the first to integrate first-person narratives about parental suicide and offer strategies to deal with the anguish and after-effects of these situations. Read More

Student places second in Best Warrior competition

  • Maysee Yang Herr, Ph.D., an education professor, was a part of a team that produced "Finding the Middle Way," a documentary video project and community-based research project showing the history, complexity and value of the Hmong American community in Portage County.
  • Family & Consumer Sciences Educator Marsha Larson Ph.D., CFCS contributed to "Teaching Nutrition through Family and Consumer Sciences: A Curriculum Guide for Middle Schools."


Marty's Message

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting a visit by Sandy and Ken Falkinham. Ken ’68 and Sandy ’69 met while attending UW-Stevens Point. Sandy received her degree in early childhood education and Ken in chemistry and mathematics. Ken was also a standout member of the Pointers football team coached by Duaine Counsell. On occasion, Sandy and Ken return to UWSP to stay in touch and see how the campus has changed and reminisce.
 
There were many special moments during the day, but one that was particularly heartfelt was the meeting they had with Kerry Palmer, a senior non-traditional education student and recipient of a Falkinham Scholarship.
 
Ken and Sandy shared stories with Kerry of the impact that UW-Stevens Point has had on their lives and told how, through their scholarship, they wanted to help others receive the same life-changing experience they had experienced. Kerry thanked Sandy and Ken for doing just that for her as she shared the impact that their gift has made and how it has helped change her life as well. 
 
Kerry is a nontraditional student and mother, including a daughter who attends UW-Stevens Point as well. She commutes to Stevens Point each day from her home in Wisconsin Dells so that she can complete her degree in early childhood and special education and still care for her children. Kerry’s dreams would never be possible without the generosity of Sandy and Ken, and many others, who like them have given back through scholarships.
