Serendipity Newsletter Issue 1, July 2013

Hello!

We hope you're making the most of this lovely weather, and having a great summer so far.

Black History Month

celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King's I have a dream speech with an inspired programme launching with Punch Records' trailblazing musical tour 'Brothers and Sisters - I have A Dream!'
The line-up also includes new work Michelle Vaccaina and Keisha Grant, whom Serendipity have helped to nurture through BHS Live. This is transitional year for the festival and 2014 will see a unified programme of events taking place in October only. BHM brochures will be available soon.

Hidden Movement Book

After the success of Hidden Movement: A Black British Dance Think Tank, we have been collecting the speakers papers to release as a publication, which will be launched during Black History Month. The book aims to relate the untold history of Black Dance in the UK and will feature contributions from Dr Bob Ramdhanie, Hilary Carty, Namron, Jackie Guy and Henri Oguike, to name a few. Copies will be avaliable to pre-order soon.

Trans Pennine Challenge

Well done to Serendipity’s Pawlet and Les who along with Paul and Ruby recently took on the Trans Pennine Challenge, walking from Manchester to Sheffield while battling some very wet and windy weather, to raise money for the NSPCC.

Midnight Mermaid Walk and Pajama Party!

Congratulations to all who took part in the Midnight Mermaid Walk!
The evening kicked off with entertainment by the very talented Kezia who enchanted the audience with her haunting melodies, while Jonny Fenner  got our toes tapping with his upbeat soulful tunes, with appearances from Miss Cornwall 2013, Rosalie Douglas, and BBC Spotlight presenter, Rebecca Wills.
Over 30 determined ladies (and gentlemen) completed the marathon walk around the idyllic seaside village of St Mawes and we managed to raise over £5,500 in aid of Breast Cancer Care at The Mermaid Centre, in Truro.

Call for Commissions

Serendipity is calling for all artists wishing to get involved in Let’s Dance International Festival 2014. Further information is available on the Serendipity and LDIF websites.
