Dec. 2013 News

In late December, business at Open Doors Organization typically winds down as we tie up loose ends on the year’s projects and prepare for a well-earned vacation. But not this year. In the last amazing week, we’ve had United pick us as their corporate partner and Air Serv also come onboard with a major sponsorship. WOW!!! And on top of it all we have the taxi business and the chance to make a huge difference for our local disability community. ODO is proving longevity pays, and I sit here feeling only one thing…one thing…lucky! May you, your family and friends have a Happy, Healthy New Year!

World Health Networks

ODO is assisting WHN to redesign their Health Stations, now becoming popular in airports worldwide. While such kiosks are not specifically addressed under the ADA or Air Carrier Access Act, World Health Networks is nonetheless moving ahead to make them as accessible as possible. After all, early detection of cardiovascular problems is important to everyone. The Health Stations measure blood pressure, heart rate, weight, body fat percentage and body mass index (BMI), all free of charge.

Travelers Aid - A Useful Resource

LOT Polish Airlines contacted ODO recently concerning an elderly passenger who kept cancelling his flight, sometimes even after boarding. They were concerned about the costs to him of the change fees but also his well-being. Right away we thought of Travelers Aid International. We connected the Complaints Resolution Official from LOT with an agent from Travelers Aid at JFK. The agent escorted the passenger through security and all the way to the gate and then waited with him until the plane departed. The man was finally able to make the trip to see his family, and LOT now has a resource right at the airport for any future assistance. We love a happy ending!

DOT ACAA Event in DC

On Dec. 11, the Dept. of Transportation held a one-day event in Washington, DC, on the final rules under Part 382 on web sites, kiosks and seat strapping. Judging by questions from airline representatives, it is compliance with web accessibility standards that will present the greatest challenge. Doug Mullen of A4A announced that the association has requested an extension on the 6-month deadline for placarding closets for wheelchair stowage. DOT plans to respond in the near future. According to Blane Workie, these placards must be posted on the exterior of the closet. With regard to passengers displaced by seat strapping, she noted that airlines could ask for volunteers rather than bumping passengers and paying compensation under 14 CFR Part 250. ODO will provide links to the day's various presentations when they become available.

ACI-NA Kiosk Webinar

Airports Council International-North America recently hosted a webinar on new accessibility requirements for airport kiosks. It featured speakers from the DOT and US Access Board and a lively Q&A session.  A recording of the event and pdf of the presentations are available on their website.
