Welcome to the December issue of the ISU Geospatial Technology Newsletter! This month we have a new task sheet, Introduction to Creating and Using an ArcGIS Online Trial Subscription, a list of a variety of useful resources for local, state and national level GIS data, and some fun interactive maps.
This list of data sources is in no way a complete, all encompassing list of data sources. If you know of one and would like us to share it in another newsletter please let us know by replying to this email.
Interactive web mapping has become a fun and useful method to share visual information broadly. This month we highlight two examples! The first, Geography of Jobs, press play and watch the net job gains and losses for the past ten years. You will see the impact of Hurricane Katrina, the auto industry downfall, and the recession. The second, Mapping the Rise of Craft Beer, this interactive map illustrates the rise of the American craft-beer industry.
ISU Extension to Communities and Economic Development is still accepting registrations for the winter two-day Essentials of GIS short course, being held January 9-10, 2014. The course will be taught at the CED office in the ISU Research Park in Ames and is a great introduction or refresher to GIS applications, tools and software.
