In the beginning was the Word…

In today’s Gospel, John 1:1-18, we meditate on the Word becoming flesh. John begins his Gospel with the same words that begin the Scriptures, as if to invoke the entire written word of God as a whole, as one concept of God’s revelation, which comes to fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to speak a word? If one were to pour forth his whole being into a word, what would it be like? What would it be like if our words were to become flesh? Would they be filled with grace and truth, like the Word of the Lord?

This is an image, or rather an analogy, to help us to understand something about God’s revelation of Himself in Christ Jesus. We can have a glimpse into the reality of what it means for God to speak to us of His immeasurable love for each one of us. He Who is Love itself speaks to us of His Love, and His Word becomes flesh. Just as He spoke and the world was created, so He speaks the same Word of Love to redeem us, in order to fulfill the promise He made to us at the moment of Creation – You are mine; you will be united with me in perfect happiness and peace.

This happens not be man’s willing it, but by God’s free act of love. He comes to dwell among us, bringing us grace and truth – the wholeness for which we all long. He makes us sharers in His glory, superabundantly fulfilling all our expectations and our longing. He goes to such lengths to provoke a response from us. Let it be a response filled with humility, gratitude and joy. “Thank you for loving me. I love you too.”
