Marty's Message

Of the 699 graduates at commencement this past weekend, 222 of them were from the College of Professional Studies. Speaker Cliff King '83 is an alum of our School of Business & Economics and is now CEO of Skyward Inc. The student speaker was CPS Café student manager Penny Warren. One very special graduate from CPS was Lisa Ebert.

Cliff delivered a simple, yet powerful commencement speech. His message was heartfelt and right on the mark. He told our graduates of how important it will be for them to “follow their passions and persevere.” He reminded us that “our lives will be what we make them to be, and our decisions will create our life’s legacy.” Cliff’s speech was a fitting prelude to Penny and Lisa.

Penny left her position as a police dispatcher at age 40 to pursue her college education. Penny reminded us all of how important it is to pursue our dreams. Her decision took hard work and certainly took a lot of courage.

I was proud to see Lisa receive her master’s degree in human & community resources, a degree that she pursued part time over the past six years. It was earned with perseverance while working full-time as a program associate in the School of Health Promotion & Human Development.

Cliff, Penny and Lisa followed their dreams and persevered. The results have been no less than remarkable.

Marty Loy,
CPS Dean
