The SLF Working-Class Announces Impoverished Writers' $750 Grant
Working class, blue-collar, poor, and homeless writers have been historically underrepresented in speculative fiction, due to financial barriers which have made it much harder for them to have access to the writing world. Such lack of access might include an inability to attend conventions, to purchase a computer, to buy books, to attend college or high school, to have the time to write (if, for example, you must work two jobs simply to pay rent and feed a family, or if you must spend all your waking hours job-hunting for months on end). The SLF would like to assist in finding more of these marginalized voices and bringing them into speculative fiction.

Re imagining Rosa Parks
at Prince George's Community College Galleries at the Library
The narrative of Rosa Parks as accidental activist has been challenged in Jeanne Theoharis’ recent book, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks. While history has peddled the notion she was nothing more than a tired seamstress with sore feet, Theoharis describes a different Rosa Parks—one who was keenly aware of how to engage in civil disobedience to provoke change. We invite artists to submit works that directly or metaphorically examine the identity of Rosa Parks beyond events that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Artists are also invited to submit works that deal with the wealth of issues surrounding Civil Rights, which would include, but are not limited to, works reflecting on the March on Washington, Emancipation, the Voting Rights Act, or Freedom Riders.
