ICAAP: Developing Police Leadership in the HIV Response
Police have a critical role in harm reduction; firstly, evidence of the impact of police activity on the willingness of potential clients to access services is irrefutable – both positive and negative. Secondly, police predominance means officers are perfectly positioned to advocate to the community and legislators in support of harm reduction approaches. Appropriately, the subject of ‘Developing Police Leadership in the HIV Response’ was featured in a satellite session at the 11th International Congress on AIDS in the Asia Pacific hosted by Bangkok in November 2013 to highlight the importance of police influence in preventing HIV. LEAHN signs MoU with Asian Harm Reduction Network
In a significant move to increase partnerships between police and harm reduction practitioners in the Asia region, the Law Enforcement and HIV Network (LEAHN) and the Asian Harm Reduction Network (AHRN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to collaborate for the benefit of harm reduction services. Police from Cambodia and Vietnam study harm reduction and public health leadership in Australia
In August 2013, 11 police from Cambodia and Vietnam travelled to Australia to undertake public health leadership training. The course included leadership training at the Australian Institute of Police Management, Australia's premier training institution for senior police.
