PAT Testing
Electrical Portable Appliances - Health and Safety For Businesses

PAT Testing or Portable Appliance Testing is an important part of any health and safety policy.

The Health and Safety Executive states that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing. The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) places such an obligation in the following circumstances:

  • 1. Where appliances are used by employees.
  • 2. Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.
  • 3. Where appliances are supplied or hired.
  • 4. Where appliances are repaired or serviced.

PAT Testing or Portable Appliance Testing is the main way employers, employees and self-employed persons can comply with the provisions of the regulations. Stirling Electrical Services Ltd. have been carrying out PAT Testing since the company formed in 1996 and we carry out tens of thousands of appliance safety checks each year. In that time we regularly come across appliances which pose both a shock and fire risk. Remember with electricity and electrical appliances, even though it is working it does not mean it is in a safe working order.

For more details of our PAT Testing service please visit our dedicated PAT Testing pages on our website.

More information on PAT Testing can also be found at www.pat-testing.info
