Greetings from Adam
Former LTC member Adam Bates - who appeared in many of our productions including The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and The Winslow Boy - is currently over in South America having secured a job as a sports commentator. We've asked him to let us know how we was getting on - and here's his festive message:
While you're getting the thermal socks out and turning the heating up a little bit more, I thought I'd say a quick hello from sunny Uruguay. After a couple of months I've settled in to a terrific flat with the South Atlantic at the end of the street within walking distance of work. That's what I came here for, to start a new job as Head of Commentary at a broadcasting facility in Montevideo. I commentate on a lot of football and assess and train potential new freelance commentators.
The first thing to say about the place is that almost everybody I've come across has been extremely friendly, generous and inquisitive. One of the first things they ask me about is what I think of Liverpool's Luis Suárez. He's an absolute hero here. It's easy to make friends and this week I've been invited to my first Uruguayan wedding!
Adjusting to the pace of things here has been a little difficult. It took a month for internet to be installed, only to be told I couldn't have it in the end because of broken wires and it took two months for them to successfully open a bank account for me. Given the naming customs of hispanic countries, I was a fraction away from being renamed Adam Bates Creamer! Everybody has two surnames here and incredulous that I only had one, they just stole my mum's maiden name without asking!
As I've alluded, the weather is almost always gorgeous, though I haven't made full use of the beach yet. In fact, I'm very worried about summer, which is on the doorstep. I slapped on the factor 50 at the weekend and still came home burnt. My free time is mainly spent training at the gym and elsewhere for a special event that will happening in March back home...stay tuned! That and my unsociable working hours mean I don't get a lot of time to party, but there was still time for a memorable evening in the company of the manager and brother-in-law of Al Pacino. He had a story or two...
Hope everybody's coping well with the post-show comedown from Sweeney Todd, which I'm told was splendid. I'm back for a few days (literally just a few) at Christmas so if you fancy reprising it on Boxing Day then that would be perfect!

The LAFTAS are coming
The LAFTAS are our annual members-only celebration of Little Theatre Company's year. After our AGM we hold a tongue-in-cheek awards ceremony for members of the company and a few specially invited guests. This year, though, a very special award has been added to the ones we hand out for acting, backstage, front of house and being a good sport.
Adam Bates's grandmother - an LTC patron and big supporter of our work - sadly passed away, and Adam's uncle was very keen that her support for the youth members of the company should be remembered. He has donated the money to buy a very special trophy which - starting this December - will be awarded annually for the youth performance of the year. The trophy will be called 'The Adam Bates Trophy for Youth Performance awarded in memory of Mrs Vera Creamer'. Details of who won it will be in our February newsletter - but you'll be able to read it on our Facebook Page before then if you follow us on Facebook. |
Razor-sharp Sweeney
We were thrilled with the feedback our November production of Sweeney received. As well as a wonderful review on WestMidlandsTheatre.com, we had some fantastic messages from audience members. Here's just a few of the comments:
"Never have I been to an amateur dramatic performance that was superior to the multi-million pound Hollywood movie produced. A stunning performance by all cast members, so much so that I struggle to single people out, but Todd, I have to say, was an absolute marvel!"
"Can I just say Wow, fabulous show. More than worth a watch the cast were fabulous. Well done everyone."
"Just seen your performance of Sweeney Todd... hands down one of the best performances by a cast I've ever seen. Well done all."

Trent & Dove honour
We were very honoured that Little Theatre Company was a finalist in the Impact on the Community Awards 2013 organised by Trent and Dove Housing and celebrated at Branston Golf and Country Club.
There were some fantastic stories of inspiring organisations and individuals doing amazing work in and around Burton. It was a privilege to be in the same room with them and no surprise that they beat us to the top honours.
We may not have brought home a trophy, but Elaine Pritchard did bring home one of the Ferrero Rocher trees that decorated the tables after finding a lucky star under her chair which meant she won it.

A drop of the demon drink
Many of you may know that the bar service at Brewhouse events - including Little Theatre Company shows - is provided by the BADAC (Burton and District Arts Council) bar volunteers.
Brian Alston - who regularly manages the bars - organised a specially-labelled Sweeney Todd beer for the run of our November musical with local brewery Quartz Brewing.
It proved to be a great hit - and the stock didn't last the whole week - but it was very popular with those lucky enough to buy a bottle.
Huge thanks to Brian!
The bar volunteers, and the Brewhouse volunteer stewards, jointly won the Olga Lloyd Award in the 2013 Burton Civic Society Awards for the contribution to the cultural life of Burton upon Trent. |
