“Physical Chess” arrives in the West Vancouver School District
Fencing – a sport that requires speed, agility and fitness together with chess-like strategic thinking — has arrived in the West Vancouver School District. Four elementary schools have been involved so far, with a goal of extending it as a club-based after-school activity throughout most of the district.

The WVSD Honour Choir performed for a packed house on December 5 at St. Stephen's Church to benefit the Province's annual Empty Stocking Fund. The event raised $410.75 from donations at the door.

The Honour Choir program includes 80 of the most talented singers from across the district. Students in Grades 7-12 audition in the spring for a spot. During the school year, they attend evening classes to hone their choral abilities and prepare for concert and festival performances.

Sentinel hosts annual pyjama drive
Sentinel Secondary's third annual Pyjama Drive for Admiral Symour School was a huge success with the connection between the two school communities growing even stronger. This year's special event included a total of about 400 students and featured a lunch prepared by the Sentinel foods classes, craft-making and buddy reading, as well as a music concert in the school theatre. The afternoon ended with every Admiral Seymour student receiving a pair of new pyjamas and a hand-made teddy bear.

Students honour Mandela
Several schools marked the occasion of South African leader Nelson Mandela's death by integrating classroom lessons. At Rockridge, students in one class learned to sing Nkosi Sikelel, the South African national anthem, using the Soweto choir as a guide. Another class at Hollyburn Elementary integrated inquiry with the writing process and connected the school's Code of Conduct to Mandela's teachings.

Survey prizes awarded
More than 560 people completed our Pathways to Better Communications survey last month. Three prizes were awarded to survey participants, including teacher Christine Andrews, who won a framed First Nation art print; student Arezoo Peymanfar, who picked up a $100 Chapters gift card; and parent Jianjun Zhang, who won a copy of the coffee table book From Cottages to Community.
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) released results earlier this month comparing achievement around the world. This month, Superintendent of Schools Chris Kennedy takes a closer look at achievement from a local and global perspective. Read more.
December is all about giving, and students across the district have been taking that theme to heart. West Vancouver School District Board Chair Cindy Dekker shares just a sample of what's been happening around schools within the district this month. Read more.
While the first part of the year is over, we've got a host of events planned to kick off January, including a series of open houses and the WVSS track consultation. Check out the district calendar for details.
