Hawaii Students Get Treated to a Robot 'Massage'
Friday December 6, 2013
Team Puli's rover encountered some unique terrain today at the `Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. Mililani Middle School students, as well as students from Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino, created a human road for the robotic spacecraft, and it maneuvered through the squirmy, giggly turf with success.
"If it could go over our bodies, it could probably go over pretty steep mountains or hills on the Moon," said Coby Lawrence, a 5th grader at Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino.
This morning's education/public outreach event was Team Puli's first community appearance in Hawaii since arriving from Hungary late Wednesday night. Dr. Tibor Pacher, Team Leader and CEO/Founder, along with one of the team's members, Miklos Pathy, are visiting the islands to test their rover at one of the planetary analogue sites that the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) has.
Team Puli is one of the official Google Lunar X Prize (GLXP) competitors vying for a chunk of the $30 million purse. The first privately-funded teams to land a robot on the surface of the Moon, travel 500 meters while transmitting high definition images and video back to Earth...win. The deadline to complete the GLXP space challenge is December 31, 2015.
The contest is organized by the X Prize Foundation and sponsored by Google. `Imiloa is currently showing a movie about GLXP called "Back to the Moon for Good" at the Center's digital full-dome Planetarium. Showtime is 3 PM daily. |
