Retreat Recap

Themes of the Cross - Handling Adversity

On November 23, 2013, the congregation of Holy Cross Coptic Orthodox Church gathered for the first time to meet together in a spiritual retreat setting to hear from Fr. David Milad with the theme being “How to deal with adversity”.  The day started with the congregation praying the morning prayers and included three discussions, a workshop, time for contemplation and reflection, and singing of some hymns.  More than 40 people attended this spiritual retreat and all left looking forward to the next retreat. God willing Holy Cross will conduct quarterly retreats with the next retreat scheduled for early March 2014 during the Lenten season.  More pictures of the retreat are available on the website.

Selection of Guiding Verse

Results of selection of guiding verse - Luke 9:23

Thank you to all who participated in selecting the guiding verse for Holy Cross Coptic Orthodox Church. We had a clear winner, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." Luke 9:23. Of the 32 people who voted, 17 people voted for Luke 9:23 as the verse to guide the Church. See figure for the break down in voting.

Inaugural Divine Liturgy

Hold the day - Saturday January 25 2014

Plans are underway for the inaugural Divine Liturgy on Jan 25, 2014. The Church has been blessed with the opportunity to lease a room on the second floor of St. Andrew House, Center for Orthodox Christian Studies, 23300 Davison Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48223.  This is the same beautiful building with Orthodox iconography that the retreat was held. We are making temporary signs and collecting the items needed for the liturgy.  We are blessed to have the presence and support of all three of our clergy in St Mark COC on this day.  If you would like to participate in the preparation for the very first liturgy in Holy Cross Coptic Orthodox Church, send your request to riteshymns@holycrosscoptic.org.

Community Service

Adopt-an-Angel

Thank you to all who participated in the Salvation Army Adopt-an-Angel collection.  The Church supported a family of three in the area and in return received the blessing of giving.

We will be collecting gently used winter coats for the needy during the month of January 2014.  Bring your donations to the inaugural liturgy Jan 25, 2014. The coats will be donated to local families in need.  If you would like to participate or have other community service ideas, send an email to communityservice@holycrosscoptic.org.
