What's Happening in Town?
Shop Kentville to Win! There's still time to Shop and Win in Kentville! Kentville businesses have teamed up to create an amazing prize package that one lucky shopper will win before Christmas.  Do your shopping in Kentville before December 20th and fill out a ballot to win.

Saturday, December 21
10:00am - Community Breakfast at St. James Anglican Church. The menu for our monthly breakfast includes eggs, bacon, toast, muffins, fruit salad, yogurt, baked beans, fish cakes, juice, coffee and tea.  Minimum $6.00 per person.  The Glorious Technicolour Knitters will also have an assortment of handmade items for sale.

7:30 – 9:00pm - Longest Night Concert.  Mark your calendars so you don’t miss Celtic harpists, Ardyth and Jennifer.  Beautiful music and story telling.  Admission is $10 at the door. Held at the St. James Anglican Church.

Sunday, December 22
11:00 am – Sanctuary Choir Christmas Cantata at the Kentville Baptist Church– a morning of music by the Sanctuary Choir, instrumentalists and soloists.  All welcome.

4:00-5:00 is the annual free Christmas skate sponsored by Kings Physiotherapy at the Kentville arena.

5:30-6:50, Skate with Santa. Fun and games for everyone. Helmets are mandatory for all skaters. Proceeds go to the Kentville Silver Gliders Skating Club. $2 child, $3 adult, $10 family. Event proudly supported by Edward Jones Investments. Held at the Kentville arena.

6:30: A Manger Filled With Love Christmas Cantata at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 440 Belcher Street, Kentville. This is a special night of music and the spoken word celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.  Featuring the Kentville Ward Choir.  Free Admission.  678-2116

Tuesday, December 24
12:00-1:30pm - Free Holiday Skate at the Kentville arena sponsored by Tim Hortons

4:00pm, 7:00pm and 9:00pm the Saint James Anglican Church in Kentville will be having Christmas eve services.

6:30pm – Christmas Eve Candlelight Family Service at the Kentville Baptist Church.   Traditional carols sung by the congregation, Bible readings, Christmas sermon, special music by the choirs, all welcome.

7:30pm - Living Nativity service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

10:00 pm – Christmas Eve service with the Senior Choir at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Wednesday, December 25
10:00am - the Saint James Anglican Church will have a Christmas morning service.
10:00 am - Christmas morning service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Wednesday, January 1
2:00-3:30pm - Free Holiday Skate at the Kentville arena sponsored by Tim Hortons

The Friends of the Kentville Ravine aren’t opposed to development, but they want to see steps taken to protect an ecologically sensitive area. The discussion revolves around the potential risks to the ravine system posed by new development at Highway 101 Exit 12 in New Minas, particularly those associated with the recent acquisition of land by Kent Building Supplies. Downtown Kentville is about to get louder as the fire department siren returns. The siren was controlled by a phone line and set off by Valley Communications when they issue a page to the Kentville department, at a cost of $30 to $40 a month, plus maintenance. The department can now set the alarm off themselves using  cell phone technology to activate the alarm.  READ MORE

Dr. Wightman Dr. Howard Wightman - Kentville is so privileged to have top-notch medical care. Take cardiologist Dr. Howard Wightman, for example. But it’s his work outside of the hospital for which he's received recognition from his community in Kentville. Dr. Wightman’s passion for promoting good health and assisting his community in the prevention of disease is to be applauded. READ MORE

Kentville Skate Park recently presented a request to the Kings County Council for funding. The association wants to partner with the Town of Kentville, the County of Kings and the provincial and federal governments, as well as undertaking community fundraising, to make the skate park a reality. A delegation from Indonesia was in Wolfville and Kentville Dec. 4 as part of a visit sponsored in part by the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities and Institute of Public Administration Canada. READ MORE

Recreation News
Photo: For those of you out there that have either run with... cycled with.... gone snowshoing with... and moved more just because of....our Active Living Coordinator.Nichole's last day as our Active Living Coordinator here at the Town of Kentville is today December 6. Nichole will be taking her enthusiasm for recreation a few blocks away to the Municipality of the County of Kings. When you see her  please wish Nichole all the best in her new career.”For those of you out there that have either run with, cycled with, gone snowshoeing with and moved more just because of our Active Living Coordinator,Nichole Lutz, her  last day as our Active Living Coordinator here at the Town of Kentville was December 6. Nichole will be bringing her enthusiasm for recreation just a few blocks away to the Municipality of the County of Kings. When you see her please wish Nichole all the best in her new position.

Free Skate Times! There is a Thursday after school free skate from 3:00pm-4:00pm currently talking place at the arena, and over the holidays we will be having free skates on December 22nd from 12:00pm-1:30pm, December 24th from 4:00pm-5:00pm, December 26th  from 6:30-8:00, December 27th from 6:30-8:00 and  on New Years Day from 2:00pm - 3:30pm.

KCA School News
The last day of school before the Christmas break is Friday, December 20th. Students will return on Monday, January 6th. Please watch for all the extra-excited kids on the streets this holiday break!

Art Display: When Two Hearts Collide at the Designer Cafe, Kentville: Heather Alexis Porter and Jen White have teamed up to create When Two Hearts Collide. Stunning art work depicting togetherness vs. solidarity. Their art work will be on our walls from Dec 1 until Jan 12.

REMINDER: Winter Parking Ban is in Effect: No parking on the streets between 1am and 7am from December 15th until April 15, 2014.
The Town of Kentville wishes to remind its residents that during the snow removal season, November 1st through March 31st, objects such as hockey nets, basketball nets, soccer nets, etc. must be stored outside of the road right of way at all times.  The road right of way width behind your side of the curb is generally 10 feet.  The overall road right of way width is 50 feet.

SEEKING Director of Parks and Recreation: The Town of Kentville is looking for an enthusiastic professional, who will be a valued member of the Senior Management Team, whose primary goal is to help shape the future of services for its residents. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director will provide leadership and strategic advice in the areas of parks, trails, open spaces, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, recreation programming, culture, and special events. This individual will present routine information to Town Council. Deadline to apply is December 20th.

Kentville Board of Police Commissioners: Citizen Appointment: The Kentville Board of Police Commissioners is presently accepting applications from Kentville residents interested in being considered for an appointment to the Kentville Board of Police Commissioners. The function of the Kentville Board of Police Commissioners is to provide to the Kentville Police Service;
(a) civilian governance on behalf of the council in relation to the enforcement of law, the maintenance of law and order and the prevention of crime in the municipality; and
(b) the administrative direction, organization and policy required to maintain an adequate, effective and efficient police department.
Applicants being considered must be willing to undergo criminal and background checks.
