Welcome to the December Newsletter 2013

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

The last two weeks of term have been filled with examinations, as well as Christmas celebrations and other end of term events.

All the pupils in the school have had end of term examinations. Results and teachers’ comments are all included in the end of term two reports. Please read these carefully with your children, paying particular attention to any areas in which they can improve. It is, of course, very important that the pupils listen to their teachers’ comments so that they can improve and achieve even better grades next term.

In the last week of term we had three major Christmas events, our annual Carol Celebration, a visit to the German Christmas market in Birmingham and a fantastic Christmas lunch. All three were lovely events and a fitting way to end a very long term.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Regards,

Stuart Higgins
Principal

Christmas Carol Celebration

Four weeks’ preparation had gone into presentation and rehearsal. The pupils chosen to be Readers, had coaching and also a lot of practice in order to perfect their performances. The choir, under the tutelage of Mrs. King had gone through their paces; they knew they were the focal point and the collective voice of the college. Even those with no obvious leaning to sing had been gently encouraged to lend their raw baritone, basso, vibrato and tenor to the proceedings. An atmosphere of enjoyment is key to collective song of course.

"Were they ready?" – was the question on everybody’s lips as we filed into the church adjoining Saint Michael’s for the Carol Celebration - which has become a tradition over the years. "Yes, indeed and more" came the collective response as kindred spirits and the occasional soprano soared underpinned by the mighty church organ.

St Michael's College involvement with Tenbury Mistletoe Festival

Below is a letter of thanks for the College’s involvement with the Tenbury Mistletoe Festival, which we received  from the festival’s organizer Caroline Palethorpe:

On behalf of Tenbury Mistletoe Association, (TMA) I should like to thank St Michael's College for participating so enthusiastically in this year’s Mistletoe Festival.

The art work on display in the ‘Mistletoe Shop’ at Books, Books, Books is extremely good and we received an enquiry to buy one canvas on Festival Day. I am negotiating a good price at this very moment.

The Choir sang beautifully outside The Pump Rooms and made quite an impression on the audience.

Into exam mode – students prepare for term’s last hurdle

Saint Michael’s pupils are gearing up for exams in preparation for the last week of the term. ‘Silent Night’ has more to do with the will to study rather than seasonal goodwill towards men at the moment. Decorations are indeed up around the college but the atmosphere is more of furrowed brows and studious silence, as the festive break is a little way off yet.

Students rewarded with trip to capital

On Saturday 30th November our pupils who had been good all term were rewarded with a trip to London.  The air was chilling yet the atmosphere tinged with a festive excitement.  As we descended the coach at the London Eye – the giant ferris wheel installed across the river from the celebrated Houses of Parliament – where to go?  First stop was the Tate Art Gallery close by for a quick glimpse at some modern artists.  Next up was the famous Tower Bridge, which opens to allow sea traffic to pass safely under it. A pause in Chinatown was made before going onward to the British Museum to see some mummies (yes, the Egyptian kind) and Oxford Street for some last minute shopping.  ‘Phew’ was the general happy refrain as the coach made its way westward once again.

‘Business Students visit firm to get full picture’

A group of our GCSE Business students paid a visit to the Hereford Group Training Association to enjoy a tour and learn more about apprenticeships. As part of their IGCSE Business course our pupils gained a day’s knowledge and experience of how young Britons train for apprenticeships via a non-academic route. A question and answer session brought forth pertinent questions from the Saint Michael’s visitors. The visit concluded with a tour of the engineering workshops and a chance to meet and ask questions of the apprentices on site.

Art trip to Barcelona

Spanish teacher Carolyn Bassett last week led a group of her pupils on a few days’ discovery adventure of Art and Language in Barcelona. Staying in the heart of the city, pupils marveled at the architectural flamboyance of Gaudi: the Casa Batlo and the Church of the Sagrada Familia among other items; and gaped in astonishment at the work on display at the Picasso Museum. The tall, narrow streets of the Born district hold a mystique and romance for many, and it was certain that our pupils came away deeply impressed by the whole experience.

Business competition in Worcester

BASE is ICAEW’s national Business, Accounting and Skills Education competition for students aged 16-19. Saint Michael’s students took part in the Worcester heat on the 27th November. It was a day-long challenge and a unique and exciting experience. Our students took part in a  challenging business game that enabled  them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. We entered two teams into the competition, who are pictures in action below: Team A (left) and Team B (right).

Basketball match

On 27th November Wigmore High School played host to a basketball game against Saint Michael’s. A fantastic game finished with the score being 44-16 in favour of Saint Michael's, Zhou, one of the Saint Michael’s team, said â€œIt was so much fun, the other players improved their game and we became more like a team.” A special mention also to C Hasegawa, the Saint Michael's Team Captain, who was influential in securing a comfortable and stylish victory.
