Swan 60 EMMA - Meet the Team

Dr. Johann Killinger is the owner of the beautiful Swan 60 EMMA. Purchased in August 2009, Mr Killinger chose a Swan 60 as he wanted a high performance yacht which he could both race and cruise. His home port is Hamburg and they sail out of the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein.

We spoke with Dr. Killinger to discover the things he enjoys most about Swan 60 EMMA:

Q. Favourite sailing memory onboard your Swan?
A. There are so many, including the delivery from Northern Europe to Mallorca as that was fantastic. All of our family vacations on EMMA are brilliant; we combine sailing with anchoring in lovely scenic bays. Racing in the Rolex Middle Sea Race 2012 was also one of my favourite memories onboard EMMA.

Q. Favourite anchorage and reasons behind choice?
A. Capoeira Islands, South of Mallorca is a wonderful place, protected, quiet and clean. Pirate Bay in the Maddalena Archipelago is also wonderful and a favourite place of the kids. There are also lots of Greek bays which are stunning.

Q. Favourite beverage to enjoy onboard?
A. A nice cool white wine at anchor, whilst listening to Zorbas the Greek music.

Q. Favourite meal onboard
A. It would have to be our Boat Captain Hodel’s pasta with “whatever is left in the fridge” sauce.

Q. Favourite Regatta and reasons behind choice
A. Regatta Copa Del Rey Mapfre because of the beautiful conditions, they have a very professional race committee and there is perfect “après ski” in Palma de Mallorca.

Q. Dream destination to visit with your Swan
A. The British Virgin Islands and Maine.

Swan 60 Quick Facts

Q. How long does it take to build a Swan 60?
Just under one year.

Q. When was the first Swan 60 built?
The first Swan 60 was delivered in 2009 – this is the German Swan 60 EMMA.

Q. How many Swan 60s are on the water at present?
There are eight Swan 60s now sailing and two more in build – both for delivery in 2014.

Q. What are the unique features of the Swan 60?
To begin with the Swan 60 is built using the latest technology, design and construction methods; this model has an entirely new hull built from advanced materials. The Swan 60 is light and responsive thanks to the semi-planing speeds and foils with a forgiving performance. There are many design and interior options for owners who choose a Swan 60  which means each model can be made uniquely to the owner’s tastes.

Q. What are the benefits to crews racing on a Swan 60 compared to other race boats?
The Swan 60 is a very comfortable boat compared to pure racing boats, also the ease of handling is a benefit – the Swan 60 offers high stability and direct steering systems which means race teams enjoy unhindered movement around the boat at all times. Additionally the carbon fibre spars and racing foils (3.6 M draught) ensure a consistent racing performance.

The Swan 60 is also an ISAF Class with a full calendar of one design racing – the first circuit has now been completed and the Class is well established.
