DECEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER

Adapting to winter was a bit of a shock for us here as we were languishing in a warm, prolonged summer last month, when suddenly the temperatures plummeted and we woke up to snow on the mountains. Autumn opted out this year!

Christmas is fast approaching so Christmas lunches, events and of course shopping are in abundance. Spain, however, does not go overboard with pre-Christmas advertising so the lead up is very gentle and understated compared to other countries. Personally I feel I get the best of both worlds, as I can arrive in the UK to the hustle and bustle in the shops with the sound of Christmas carols being played and immediately catch the festive mood. I love spending Christmas with my family and staying in houses with central heating is bliss!

We have just celebrated our members' Christmas party and what great fun it was, with Santa and his forgetful elf stealing the show. Over 50 members, children and supporters were there to enjoy the Christmas mulled wine and good food, music and games. A local DJ, John Migan, kindly came along and gave his time for free.

As the year draws to an end I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the committee, mentors, service providers and helpers who have worked hard to make Guardian Angels successful. Each and every one is a true earth angel for sure.  Christmas blessings and a very happy, healthy new year to everyone.

"As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison," Nelson Mandela said after he was freed in 1990.
Welcome ...
to all our new members who have joined us recently. We now have a small group in Kenya who get support from our mentors and with our help may be able to set up their own Guardian Angels wing next year.
Positive thinking and attitude can change your life
I discovered the benefits of positive affirmations many years ago. I was doing direct selling with a ladies fashions business on a “party plan” basis and attended a training course where successful managers were speaking about how they had reached that level. The talks were inspirational and many mentioned the power of positive thinking. One lady explained about doing affirmations 100 times a day for 30 days when requiring a change. As my sales were pretty poor at the time I decided to give it a go.  I wrote out my affirmations “ I get lots of bookings”, “I have the highest sales in my unit” and started practising them every day. After a few months, I had increased my sales to become one of the best sellers in my unit and reached 14th place that year in the whole company of 3,000 co-ordinators. Managers were asking me how I got so many bookings! I won a top prize of a weekend in a luxury hotel in London, saw the Christmas lights, had great food and went to see the stage show “Chicago”. Ever since then I have practised affirmations on a daily basis. Last week I started saying “I’m very lucky, I always win prizes” (because I don’t). I bought a raffle ticket a few days ago and won the first prize – a bottle of vodka, my favourite spirit! That was a quick result!

If we don’t make changes in our lives we carry on heading in the same direction. Try some affirmations and let me know how you get on. Practise them for at least a month. Here are a few you might like to get you started:-
I make money easily and effortlessly
I love what I do and I do what I love
I am a magnet for opportunities
I radiate positive energy and abundance
I give thanks for ever-increasing health, youth and beauty
I say everything I need to say with ease and honesty
I am worthy of love
Every day in every way I get better and better

Next year
A series of fundraising events for next year are in the pipeline including a Golf Event, a Charity Ball, Pick a Date in the Calendar (people pay €5 and select a date in the calendar to win a significant prize) and a Spinathon event.

The Positive Thinking workshops will be resuming and will start with a course of five, free to members and highly recommended if you want to make positive changes in your life.  Location and dates will be emailed out.
Birthdays
We are celebrating the birthdays of members' children (where we have their dates of birth) by sending them an electronic greetings card. If you receive an email from Jacquie Lawson therefore, please follow the link to her website to view the card.
Guardian Angels Christmas Party
The party at L’Ancora got off to a festive start with a warming glass of mulled wine, followed by Christmas music and pass the parcel, the first of many games. Members, old and new, chatted and exchanged stories. A delicious buffet followed before one of Santa’s elves arrived to give out Advent calendars which she confessed were a bit late (but not to tell Santa!). The children were very excited at Santa’s arrival and once it was confirmed that they had all been very good (ahem), each one was delighted to receive a Christmas present. A great time was had by all.

Musical bingo evening
An evening of fun, food and the odd fandango proved a great success in raising funds recently. The fund-raising event, organised by Angel Gill Somers, was held at the Ruby Rocks restaurant in Javea and the musical bingo, followed by an '80s disco, was provided by Max's Music Match.  More than 70 friends and supporters enjoyed the evening and were delighted with the 'musical full-house' and raffle prizes, which had been generously donated by local businesses and supporters. A brilliant 625€ was raised, which was a great result and helped towards our wonderful Christmas party.
Calendar Angels calendar
This is the last chance to purchase our fabulous calendar before the new year.  We still have a few of these tasteful, unique calendars left.  The funds raised to date have been donated to the members for the cost of expensive school books and we have had many messages of gratitude in return.

As well as raising funds, the aim of the calendar is to create awareness of Guardian Angels in other parts of Spain and in other countries.  Anyone who would like to know more about starting up a “wing” please contact tricia@guardian-angels.es.  If you would like buy a calendar please contact vernon@guardian-angels.es or go to our special Facebook page for a list of outlets in Spain or how to purchase one to be posted to friends or faimily in the UK.
