The Town & Gown Players present
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Directed by Bryn Adamson

Oscar Wilde lived in Chelsea’s fashionable neighborhood and took a seaside holiday to West Sussex in 1895 where he wrote The Importance of Being Earnest in two months. Wilde has been quoted as saying, “It is exquisitely trivial, a delicate bubble of fancy, and it has its philosophy…that we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality.”

A major theme of the play is a satire of the upper classes. Wilde sprinkles the dialogue with epigrams: brief, clever and memorable statements, sometimes satirical and sometimes just confusing.

The director, Bryn Adamson, says the play â€œis delightful with a cast that will make you laugh in spite of yourself.”

Cast:
John Worthing, J.P. (Jack) - Patrick Najjar
Algernon Moncrieff - Nathan Altman
Reverend Canon Chasuble - Adam Shirley
Merriman - Isaac Callahan
Lady Bracknell - Elinor Hasty
Gwendoline Fairfax - Katie Andrew
Cecily Cardew - Emma Atchley
Miss Prism - Virginia Simmons
Lane - Daniel Johnson

The Importance of Being Earnest runs February 7-9 and 13-16. Showtimes are 8:00pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a Sunday matinee at 2:00pm. Town & Gown’s next Second Stage Production will be Rossum’s Universal Robots (R.U.R.), a sci-fi production directed by Cord Sibilsky and Sarah "Ski" Sapinski. This show set the stage for modern tales of artificial intelligence and features the first use of the term "robot" to describe machines built to perform tasks for humans throughout society. R.U.R. explores the full consequences of engineered sentience, for robots and for humans.

Robots, made by a single company, have been shipped all over the world to become the new labor force. The President's daughter goes to a factory to investigate the process and to convince the robots that there is a better life for them. When the robot revolution happens, how will it impact life for humans? For robots? Can one exist without the other? Should we use synthetic biology to improve life on Earth? What are the repercussions of unbridled pragmatism in commerce?

R.U.R. has inspired works of science fiction enjoyed by modern audiences, but has not found wider release in film like some stories already have. The themes and story are similar to other works, but R.U.R. goes beyond the creation and use of robots to show the impact of revolution on robots and surviving humans. We are very excited to have actors portray these dynamic robots. Stars of this production include regular T&Gers Fred Galyean, Murray Weed, and Rebekah Williams!

R.U.R. runs February 21 - March 2. Showtimes are 8:00pm on Friday and Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday. Tickets will be $5 at the door. The box office will open one hour before curtain; tickets can only be purchased day-of. Contact secondstage@townandgownplayers.org for more information.

Signing off…
Yes, this will be my last.  As of January 1, 2014, I am no longer the Membership Chair for T&G.  But, fear not, I am still on the board.  My new position is as the Publicity Chair.  I’m a bit nervous about it, but excited.  I am, however, bummed that I will no longer be working Membership.  I had grown fond of it.  I’ve enjoyed doing the Envoy for the past three years.  But, I know that Emily will do an amazing job.  I won’t blabber on about how much I’ve loved doing this, how much I’ll miss doing this.  I’m not one to dwell on things.  I’ll just talk about what I always do… my love of theatre.  Surprise! One of the best things about theatre is that it is ever changing.  There are new shows, new roles, new board members, new friends.  It’s a great place to learn, grow and experience life in all its shades.  Stay tuned as I take Publicity down my road and work more on our Facebook, our blog, our website, anything really.  Feel free to contact me, about ideas, thoughts, whatever you’d like!  But, now at my new email: publicity@townandgownplayers.org
And, as always… See you at the show!
