President's Message - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all my fellow CMAG-ers!  I want to thank you for participating in our guild in 2013. This next year is shaping up to be an exciting one. This is just some of what's new for CMAG in 2014:

  • New logo, branding and website.  We've redesigned our CMAG logo to be more modern and accessible, and in the coming months, we will be rolling out some major upgrades to the website that will make it more functional and easier to use.
  • New learning opportunities.  We have an exciting schedule of programs for our regular meetings (thanks, Bruce!) and are in the process of putting together an exciting new workshop with a visiting metal artist for the summer. We're also adding new books and educational materials to our CMAG lending library. If you haven't taken advantage of this wonderful resource, be sure to have a look during our next meeting.
  • Membership building.  To attract and orient new members, we are creating a new brochure that outlines the benefits of CMAG membership. 

Stay tuned for more news on these and other exciting initiatives in future newsletters. Better yet, come to the meetings and take part in the discussion and the fun. It's going to be a great year!

CMAG MEETINGS

Are held the second tuesday of each month at 7:15 in room 33 of the Multinomah Arts Center. Guests are welcome! Each meeting includes a general meeting where guild business is discussed, followed by an educational program. Light refreshments are provided.
Editor's Note: the member profile is a new feature that will be appearing in our monthly newsletter. This month since this is a new feature and we have a new president that many people have not yet met, we are featuring Leslie Zemenek, president of CMAG. We are actively seeking members who would like to be featured for upcoming months; contact Newsletter editor Michele Lukowski if you are interested.

January Member Profile: Leslie Zemenek

Leslie has been a painter and a textile artist and graphic designer before becoming a metalwork artist. When allergies started to make painting difficult, she turned to metalwork at the suggestion of her husband. Having had some previous experience in metals in High School, she took some classes and then began teaching herself through books and experimentation.

Leslie finds herself continuing to draw and sketch the same kinds of organic shapes for her jewelry designs that were prominent in her sketches for 

paintings and in other work she has done. Looking back on her sketches, she says she has “always drawn these shapes” and that they are influenced by an interest in underwater sea creatures, microphotography and creatures in nature. She feels it is important for her work to be unique and not influenced by other metalwork.

One of Leslie’s favorite techniques is riveting – she says that she loves integrating rivets as a design element and that she feels they are an underutilized component. Leslie works in silver primarily, but she “loves copper” and does create mixed metal pieces and pieces with unique stones.

CMAG Spring Show Applications Available

The Creative Metal Arts Guild Spring Show applications are available now for members who are planning to exhibit this year. It is a great experience to attend and have your work seen by hundreds of people. The CMAG Spring Show is one of the only recurring northwest shows dedicated solely to metal arts. It draws people from all over Oregon and Washington who are seeking unique metalwork art and jewelry. You can download an application here.

Art In The Pearl®, Portland Oregon’s annual Fine Arts & Crafts Festival, occurs every year on Labor Day weekend. The 18th annual festival will occur on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, August 30, 31 & September 1, 2014 in the Pearl District’s North Park Blocks. Art In The Pearl has been named one of the top 10 Arts and Crafts Festivals in the country (source: Art Fair Source Book). Our festival fills the Northwest Portland Park blocks with art, theater, music, and hands-on activities for people of all ages. Applications for our 2014 show are now open. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: SOULCOLOGY

Soulcology is a metals show that will display a broad spectrum of the many works that can be made of metal. Expressively displaying the many techniques used to conform metal into items from the organic to the angular, from jewelry to sculpture, to functional art and beyond. Let the work you submit for this show find a new place, from a past shift or a current moment, allowing the emotion to come through.

Lanette Barber, a metalsmith/sculptor and faculty member at GAC has initiated and will organize and curate Soulcology.

Bruce McKay has taken on the challenge of being our program director and has lined up some truly fabulous programs for 2014 so far. Stay tuned for additional information in upcoming newsletters! Here's a quick glance at what is scheduled for the next few months:

February: Shannon O'Neil

Shannon O'Neil, CMAG member and Head of Background Puppets for Laika Studios will be bringing in some actual movie stars of the puppet variety. She will give a behind the scenes look at stop frame animation puppets with examples from Laika Studios, the creators of the Coroline and Paranorman movies. The studio website is www.laika.com.

March: Bill Dawson

Bill Dawson, CMAG member, tool maker, jeweler and ancient metals expert, will give a presentation on the overall process used in making Ribbon Torcs, which are the oldest known anticlastic form in the history of metalwork.  Then he will explore the archeological evidence for the details of the process of creating these enigmatic helical objects.  This talk will include many slides of artifacts, as well as sketches and field notes from his most recent trip to the National Museum of Ireland. April: Martha Banyas

Martha Banyas, the world renowned enamelist who lives in Portland will be giving a talk on enameling for us. She will give the very comprehensive keynote address she gave at the Enamelist Conference two years ago, that is a soup-to-nuts of her art and work. She says it may be WAY more information than we want or need. We doubt that. See her work at www.marthabanyas.com

May: Stewart Jones

Stewart Jones, former CMAG President and owner of Indigo Gallery in Joseph, Oregon will be presenting a talk on the circa 1860 Rose Engraving Machine he displays and uses in his gallery showroom. This is the kind of machine used by Faberge and other jewelers over 100 years ago to create amazing patterns, often as background behind transparent enamels. MONTHLY MEETINGS & PROGRAMS


GENERAL MEETING

meeting may 2012 When: General CMAG member meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 6:45pm, meetings begin at 7:15pm, and adjourn by 9:15pm.

Where: Room 33 at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Highway Portland 97219.

What: Meetings consist of a general business and a short break with refreshments, followed by a program which may be a demonstration of a technique or tool, a slide presentation, a panel discussion, or other presentation of interest to CMAG members. The CMAG Library is open before the meeting and during the break for checking out books and magazines.

Who: Meetings are open to CMAG members and their guests.

BOARD MEETING

Board meetings are generally held prior to the General Meeting at 6:00 pm in Room 33 at the MAC (same room as the regular meeting). Members are encouraged to attend and contribute.

  • What to send: By far the most important would be reporting any CMAG event you participated in or attended. Visiting an exhibit or symposium. Taking a CMAG workshop. Our newsletter depends completely on the members to report on these activities. Also important in this vein would be metal art events you participate in outside CMAG; galleries, shows, workshops, books.

How to send: By email. Send to news@cmaguild.org . Put text in the body of the email. Try to send some text. Even if it seems a bit random. It'll work in fine. Send pictures. The internet is all about pictures. Best format is jpeg but send what you have.

When to send: Send it by the deadline.
