In 2013, we looked back on our development as an organization and re-evaluated how we fit into the changing impact measurement landscape. Since our inception, the world of impact measurement has grown exponentially. More and more people from different backgrounds are hunting for resources to help them understand the connections between media pieces and social change. These resources need to be scalable solutions that give accessible, meaningful analysis. They need to not only reveal how media has created change in the past, but also help identify new, actionable opportunities. Therefore, in 2014, we're committing to rising to this challenge by thinking bigger, smarter, and more creatively than ever before. We're looking forward to developing new tools and solutions to help answer the call for expanding the ability of media to spark positive change in the world.

ImpactSpace gains momentum
Last November, we released the Alpha version of HI ImpactSpace which visualized five categories of impact. Since then, we've talked in depth with filmmakers, funders, impact producers, and social issue advocates about their unique goals and challenges. Thank you to everyone that came in to offer their insights! We collected tons of detailed feedback on how to make ImpactSpace more useful, user-friendly, and fun to work with.
The next few months will be dedicated to translating all of that feedback into new features that will make the app even more intuitive and valuable for both its Free and Pro users. Stay tuned for more information on our progress and how to get involved in the Spring newsletter. Sign up to stay up to date on HI ImpactSpace.
In case you missed it: Talks and events
On January 19, Deputy Director Debika Shome presented to a packed house at the Sundance Film Festival in a panel called "Beyond Butts in Seats and Tweets, How Do We Know Films Are Making a Difference?" The panel examined impact measurement in the film industry.  A recap of the event and list of resources for filmmakers is available on our blog.
On November 13, Executive Director John S. Johnson, Deputy Director Debika Shome, and Data Scientist Burton DeWilde attended Media Impact Focus, hosted by Media Impact Funders. John S. Johnson gave an afternoon keynote, which is available for viewing on the MIF website. In addition, Debika Shome and Burton DeWilde participated in a panel, "Film and Entertainment: Impact Frameworks and Resources."
On October 24, Deputy Director Debika Shome, Manager of Research and Strategic Development Joanna Raczkiewicz, and Senior Creative Technologist Clint Beharry presented ImpactSpace at Dissection: Impact, hosted in Oakland California by the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR). On January 30, CIR will be hosting a followup event,  Dissection B: Impact, in conjunction with the Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Clint Beharry will represent HI and present our progress on ImpactSpace.

On October 15, Clint Beharry also presented at the Power to the Pixel Crossmedia Forum in London, England. A video of his talk, "Optimizing Stories for Future Impact," is now available in the Pixel Report.

On our minds, on our blog: Research methods

During the past few months, we hunted for new theories and methods to measure impact. Our recent blog posts on The Ripple Effect documented some of our findings. We explored a framework for comparing narrative structures using the films, Sicko and How to Survive a Plague. We also delved into the national conversation around healthcare as a case study in network analysis and Natural Language Processing.

Additionally, we commemorated the release of ImpactSpace Alpha with a piece on why we're building it, who we're building it for, and how we see it developing in the future.
