Two upcoming events offer opportunities for you to share your work with a wider audience and to gain presentation experience. If you are involved in mentored research, think about submitting an application to:
Research in the Capitol will take place in the Rotunda of the Iowa Statehouse on
April 1. Twenty students from each of ISU, UNI and UI will be chosen to display posters and discuss their research, highlighting the importance of undergraduate research to legislators, reporters, and top university administrators. Information about the submission process for prospective participants can be found at

January 31.
ISU's 8th annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression will take place in the Memorial Union on
Tuesday, April 15. The Symposium is a professionally-styled conference in which students make oral presentations supported by PowerPoint at faculty-moderated sessions. More information about the Symposium and the submission process for prospective participants can be found at

February 15.

Meeting on Competitive Language and Post-Graduate Study Abroad Scholarships for U.S. Students
Students of all majors and years are invited to attend an informational meeting on competitive international scholarships. The meeting will be held from
12:10 – 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24 in the Study Abroad Center, 3228 Memorial Union. ISU coordinators for the Rhodes, Marshall, Rotary, Cargill, Fulbright, & Boren Scholarships will describe these prestigious and highly-competitive international awards, their selection criteria, and the types of study, activities and/or language training each supports. The majority of these scholarships require applicants to be US citizens; international students may be able to apply for the Rotary or Fulbright Scholarship through their home country. Pizza will be provided, so come for lunch and invaluable information!

2013-2014 Cargill Scholars Program Application Now Available
In addition to an
annual scholarship award of $2500 for up to three years, the Cargill Global Scholars Program provides
leadership development opportunities through seminars, networking events, and a one-on-one mentoring program with executives from Cargill. 10 scholarships will be awarded during the 2013-2014 academic year, and students in the following areas are encouraged to apply: agriculture-related fields, business, computer science, economics, engineering, food science, international relations, political science, and public policy. The application deadline is

Amgen Scholars U.S. Program
The Amgen Scholars Program celebrates scientific inquiry by providing undergraduates with
faculty-mentored summer research opportunities in science and engineering fields. The US Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at some of the nation's leading educational institutions. Amgen Scholars will:
- take part in important university research projects, gain hands-on lab experience, and contribute to the advancement of science
- interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the world's leading academic scientists
- attend scientific seminars, workshops, and other networking events

Amgen Scholar applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents; undergraduates enrolled in 4-year colleges or universities; and be classified as sophomores, juniors, or non-graduating seniors. The
University of Washington (UW) in Seattle welcomes applications from all eligible students. UW program dates are June 23 - August 22nd, 2014, and the application deadline is Monday, February 3, 2014. Undergraduate participants will experience research with UW faculty mentors in the biomedical sciences while receiving a generous stipend, housing, meal plan, transportation to and from the UW campus and more. Sustainable Bioenergy REU at K-State
The Kansas State University Center for Sustainable Energy seeks applications for its
summer 2014 REU program in sustainable bioenergy funded by the National Science Foundation. The program has openings for undergraduates in Agriculture Economics, Agronomy, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Grain Science and Industry, and Sociology. The research participants will receive in this program under the guidance of faculty mentors will advance their state of knowledge in sustainable energy. Summer interns will participate in “hands-on” experiences with processing agricultural biomass, experiencing the physical environment of industrial-scale biomass processing with all its limitations and opportunities. Students will also meet people that actually perform the work to produce renewable energy in the communities where they live.
REU participants will receive a $4,500 stipend, room and board, and a travel allowance (total value of the program is $7,600/student)
Program dates are May 27-August 1, 2014 and the application deadline is

University of Washington Environmental Health Summer Research Program
The UW Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP) is a funded, nine-week summer experience for undergraduates with an interest in environmental health sciences. EHREP provides students with hands on experience in laboratories of leading researchers, introduces them to key environmental and occupational health issues while offering research exposure that will help them become competitive for graduate school. The
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is pleased to announce the availability of
scholarships (includes internships) to college sophomore students majoring in STEM disciplines related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, or technology, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA's programs and mission, e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; and computer and information sciences.
NOAA is accepting applications from students who will have Official Junior status in Fall 2014.
Eligibility requirements are:

Each Team Leader is responsible for leading and mentoring a group of 12-15 students throughout the Destination Iowa State experience. The time commitment for this position includes two mandatory leadership development workshops, completing a course on Blackboard, and being available for the entire Destination Iowa State program from August 20-23, 2014.
