NiRA is for all stakeholders
A few days ago, the Secretariat of your beloved Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) hosted the body of Registrars to an end of year forum cum 2013 get-together in the city of excellence, Lagos.
The turnout was excellent as the active Registrars were there. I used the opportunity to admonish our registrars who are still seeing themselves as separate from NIRA to have a rethink by taking ownership of NIRA and our national resource .NG.
This call was necessary as I have realised that until this ownership is accomplished, then will our Registrars brace up to overcome whatever challenges currently facing them, to really see the .NG business booming. That NIRA would be in good economic standing to initiate more programmes that could move the registry to the next level where it should be in comity of registries.
I reiterated the fact that NIRA is for every well-meaning Nigerian and internet community stakeholders at large, but charged to manage the .NG national resource on behalf of all stakeholders. Hence, it became pertinent for .NG Registrars to see NIRA as their extension, by improving on customer relations and marketing buy-in of this project.
The event attended by members of the executive board including Messrs Lanre Ajayi, Remmy Nweke and Shehu Sekiru, saw the chairman of the Accreditation Committee, Mr. Muhammed Rudman, re-emphasised on jointly building a stronger registry in NIRA for .NG and encouraged registrars to feel free to contact members of the Executive Board where they think their requests are not receiving required attention, because at NIRA, “we all are members of one family.”
Our secretariat led by the Acting Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Akinbo Adebunmi was also handy to offer clarifications where needed on some Policy Development Processes (PDP), even as the vice president, Mr. Sunday Folayan and Mr. Tope Fashedemi joined via online.
As the year 2013 draws to a close, and still in the holiday mood, I enjoined all members including registrars and registrants alike to enjoy the season as we look forward to an exciting New Year in 2014.

Three Nigerians win Fellowship for Singapore public meeting
The successful candidates for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Fellowship for the 49thPublic Meeting in Singapore, scheduled for March 2014 has been released, with three Nigerians making the list.
The fellowship programme brings global voices together at ICANN, while the Singapore meeting has 45 fellows scaling through the selection process with three being Nigerians, mostly from the academia and not-for-profit entities.
The three Nigerians are Bukola Fawole and Oluwaseun Samson Ojedeji who are both from the academia, whereas Mr. Benjamin Akintunde Akinmoyeje came from Not-for-Profit organization background.
In all, 42 fellows will be attending the Singapore meeting from 31 countries for the 49th Public Meeting holding between March 23 and 27, 2014.
Also, 15 fellows are alumni from at least one of the past 20 programmes, 23 are first-time attendees to an ICANN meeting, and four have attended meetings in past but are fellows for the first time. |
UpperLink, Web4Africa, WhoGoHost are most consistent registrars
The trios of UpperLink Limited, Web4Africa and WhoGoHost have been pronounced the most consistent registrars by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) for the year ended 2013.
Announcing this at the end of the year get together hosted by NIRA for its registrar community in Lagos recently, the acting Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Akinbo Adebunmi said that the aforementioned three registrars made it as most consistent registrars with varying degrees success.
He also announced another three registrars as the most consistent on premium category, namely Web4Africa, NetEnergy and UpperLink.
While commended those who crossed the threshold to keep up the good work, he charged other registrars to up their games in all ramification to ensure they are listed among top runners in the coming year.
According to him, this recognition is to encourage NIRA registrars to be innovative in conducting their .NG businesses so as to always grow the domain name industry in Nigeria. |
Dynamic to BigRock: ICANN authorizes bulk transfer of Domain Names
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has authorized the bulk transfer of Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) names from Dynamic Dolphin Incorporated to BigRock Solutions Limited, due to compliance actions taken by ICANN which resulted in the de-accreditation of Dynamic Dolphin Inc.
Also, the affected gTLD registries have processed the bulk transfers as directed by ICANN. Even as former registrant-customers of Dynamic Dolphin Inc. should receive notices from BigRock Solutions Ltd. Advising them of the transfer.
“Customer questions about the transfer should be directed to BigRockSolutions Ltd,” confirmed the Global Director for Media, Mr. Brad White.
He further explained that why these transfers were authorized by ICANN, saying that the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) of Dynamic Dolphin Inc. was terminated for failure by the registrar to comply with its RAA. Stressing that Dynamic Dolphin Inc.'s RAA was terminated effective 20 December 2013 and the termination notice was posted on ICANN website. |
