Lesson 111: Being Made Holy
Heb.10:5-10 connects Christ’s active and passive obedience. Christ came to do the will of His Father. By that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of Christ.
Our holiness depends entirely on Christ's work (what Jesus did).
But the same writer, 2 chapters later (Heb.12:14), talks about us striving for holiness.
The Bible speaks of both: holiness that believers have today & holiness that requires effort. These 2 parts of holiness complement each other; God saved us to holiness.
Heb.10:14 NIV by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 1 Thes.4:7; 1 Cor.1:2
Believers are sanctified, meaning made holy. Sanctification is the process of becoming holy. Through Christ, we are made holy in our standing before God, and called to daily holiness.
The Holy Spirit comes to indwell each believer; 1 reason is to make us desire holiness daily.
If a professing believer has no desire to live a life pleasing to God, can their faith be genuine? The desire for holiness in a new believer may start as a small spark, but over time it ignites.
About This Series
The goal of this series is to become more useful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, as an instrument in the Redeemer's hand. The theme verses for the series are Ephesians 4:22-24, Philemon 11, 2 Timothy 2:21
- to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
- and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.
- Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
