The View from the Deanery

Welcome back to LSE and the start of a new term.

I hope you had a relaxing break – whether you stayed in London to enjoy the Christmas and the New Year’s celebrations, travelled round the UK and/or Europe, or returned home to visit family and friends.

You are now a third of the way through your time at LSE. No doubt, the Michaelmas Term raced by very quickly, what with all the excitement of new surroundings and experiences.

This tends not to be the case with Lent Term. For some reason the psychology of this term is different.  Perhaps it is a combination of the weather (grey), the exam period still seeming a long way off (even though it isn’t) and your having settled into a routine, but towards the end of the term it will feel as if it is dragging on a bit. So it is important that you stay focused on your studies while still enjoying all that London has to offer.

To help maintain this focus, General Course 'Refreshermentation!' (see below) takes place on Wednesday 23 January in the Sheikh Zayed Theatre in the NAB from 5pm – 6pm.  This re-orientation event will go over some things we told you about at the start of the year (which you may need reminding about) and go over some new things – particularly regarding exam preparation.  It will be followed by a reception with drinks and light snacks in the Senior Common Room on the 5th floor of the Old Building.

Finally, as you settle back into your lectures and classes, a gentle reminder that you should get in touch with your academic advisor and make arrangements to meet with them in the first few weeks of term to discuss your class reports for the Michaelmas Term.  I will also be reviewing these and if I think there are any causes for concern will get in touch with you to make arrangements for us to meet up and discuss any difficulties you may be having with your academic work.
