A message from UN Women UK NC President, Jan Grasty

Dear Members and Supporters,

As we reach the end of a busy year I want to thank you for supporting UN Women, which works to change the lives of women around the world. Through your support of the UK National Committee we have been able to contribute financially to UN Women programmes in 2013 in Cambodia and Africa, providing opportunities for entrepreneurs and young women leaders to create a better life for themselves and a more positive future.

I also want to update you on the work of our trustees and volunteers, who keep the UK National Committee active, and engage with colleagues in NGOs, government and the business community.

We were very pleased to receive UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who spent 2 days meeting  ministers and representatives of international development NGOs. She also met with the UKNC board and shared her views on the priority areas for UN Women: economic empowerment, education and ending violence against women. Subsequently we were very pleased to learn that the UK Government has increased its funding to UN Women making it the highest contributor to core funding. Through our work with the UK Government we know that there is strong cross-party support for the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. However the valuable role we and other National Committees play is to support, through voluntary contributions, the work of UN Women at the grassroots programme and project level. Your support and contributions are especially welcome.

At the Commission on the Status of Women in New York in March this year members of UN Women UK worked alongside other NGOs supporting the government negotiating team to reach an historic agreement on international recommendations to end violence against women and girls. The grim figures which demonstrate the widespread violence suffered by 1 in 3 women and girls globally is a key campaign we can all support, and particularly through our contribution to the Trust Fund for ending Violence against Women.

We continue to build support from the growing corporate advisory group and already have a series of interesting meetings planned for 2014. In 2013 we announced our partnership with Opportunity Now which drives changing practices in the workplace and we see this as the start of an exciting collaboration.

On behalf of the trustees I would like to thank all our volunteers, members and friends for their continuing support which enables the UK National Committee to reach out across the UK and ensure that women and men are engaged in achieving equality for women and girls.

With very best wishes for a Happy Christmas,
Jan
