The Inner Voice - Winter 2013
2013 WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, FALL at the
Appalachian Catholic Worker (ACW)
HAPPY ADVENT!
I hope this finds you healthy, warm and waiting in joyful hope for the coming of the Nativity story! The Gospel of Luke is the only one of the 4 that gives details of how Jesus came into the world. The barn scene is my favorite. It's what makes Christmas come alive for me every year.

To make the ACW come alive for you, my Dad suggested I give more details about the people ACW serves in West Virginia. So, in the spirit of St. Luke, I've written,“A Taste of the Sweet Life.” This short story is a Thank You! for the very generous response I got from my Christmas letter last year and my encouragement for you to Keep Giving!

Yes, you really saved the ACW in a difficult time. My part-time salary with CCA just wasn't cuttin' it anymore and still isn't. But, thanks to you, we were able to pay off the new-used truck, so vital to this ministry, and have resumed building projects that will make ACW more financially self-sustaining.  Regular monthly donations supplement my CCA income for operational expenses, and our priority is still Outreach in the kinds of ways you'll read about in "A Taste of the Sweet LIfe."

In 2013, out of 321 people on the mailing list, 78 responded.  The number of people who committed to giving regularly went up from 3 to  15 monthly donors, and 4 to 11 annual donors. But we could still use help from more of you. This holiday season, please do what you can to Keep Us Goin’, Keep Us Growin’, and Keep the Love Flowin’! into the New Year, and...

MERRY NATIVITY!

PEACE & QUIET
In October, Kellie Meloun came all the way from Alabama for a 4 day solo retreat during the peak colors of Fall.  Kellie weathered our first nights of hard frost in her cozy hammock, hiked the hills, did a little reading and took pictures. We hope to see her back with Matt and their 4 girls!
Hosting retreats is a "win/win" way we can earn income for ACW ministries. Consider some time for yourself, or bring family or friends! Camp sites and Cabin available for suggested donation amounts. (Catholic Workers welcome for FREE!)   See Peace & Quiet Retreats.
Kellie's husband found us for her at RetreatFinder.com Check it out!

LISTENING TO STORIES
I love my part-time job as Administrative Director of CCA because it dovetails so well with what I do already through ACW.
This year, we began listening sessions around central Appalachia (WV, KY, VA, TN, NC) to "hear the cry of the poor."   We are collecting those stories, gathering up that cry, to give it a public voice in a multitude of ways (a written document, theater production, art exhibit, poetry, etc). Then, this first-time-ever PEOPLE'S PASTORAL will be an invitation for the church and the world to respond in action to "the least among us." Come join the "People of God!" in dialogue with one another.  Check out what's been said so far at CCA's website... ccappal.org
